Working as a consultant for the past 15 years in my experience these are some of the things that help me understand a clients business culture: - hang around both in formal and informal settings at client’s site - listen in on meetings and hang out at the coffee machine - run a conceptual modelling session with the client to understand key business concepts and processes - in this way you quickly learn their business language and terms.

Observe and listen: Attend meetings, observe interactions, and listen to how employees communicate. Culture, leadership styles, company policies, health of the business…all can impact how you engage a new customer.
