In today's business climate, networking and building credibility among your peers is key. Most prospects are not going to hire someone from a cold-call. They are going to leverage and contact the people that they "Trust" and respect for referrals.

To be considered a player in your space, there is a need for a solid marketing and branding plan. Branding is a perception delivered to an audience who knows nothing about you or your organization. Promoting your knowledge and experience will draw prospects in to "Want to learn more". Don't cut corners on your branding. Look professional which will open up doors to be able to share your knowledge and experience. Getting that first conversation is the hardest hurdle to get over.

Managing your own time is an essential skill. A valuable piece of advice I learned from a mentor: when making a To Do list, choose the thing you least want to do and do that first. You may also be surprised at a client's lack of skill in planning. That requires a delicate touch.

You may consider hiring a fractional PM to manage the project for you. The need to control every aspect of the project can easily backfire with complex deployments. Recognize what you are good at and focus on those skill-sets. Leave the management of the project and the need to learn another tool that is not your core competency to the PM expert.

You’re a freelancer, you own everything. Managing your time, communicating the status of your work, resolving conflicts, estimating, execution and sales. You are a one man band. You have to manage yourself and all of the competing needs for your time. Welcome to being a freelancer.

You need to have a bargaining skill as well. Means patience & positioning yourself to win/get the work. Providing confidence and/or reference helps to land the assignment when there is multiple bidding/competitions. Confidence could be given by breaking them into major story/tasks/milestones and identifying the blockers. Hence providing possible solutions of the blockers could easily build up the confidence & faith as rest of the work is assumed to be done. Then comes the actual Execution and Invoice clearance. Since broken into milestones with specific deliverables, thus the delivery to shipped/monitored strictly following agile delivery process which will keep the cashflow.

I would also add you should learn about accounting and basic business things like how to set up an LLC and why you might want to. Often times there’s local offices providing services for free for small businesses that can help!
