Researching the company is important for 2 reasons: 1. To show you care 2. To sell yourself on how you could align with the organisations goals and values. Focus on showing that you have really done your research. Go beyond reading the blurb on their website - who are the other players in their space, what does their target market look like, and what are the organisations goals? A-players are contacting someone in the company over Linkedin, perhaps someone in their role, to chat with them about their experiences and get insight. Then work out how to showcase that knowledge and alignment throughout the process.
It's easy to recite the golden rules... Research Listen (actively) Demonstrate applicable competence Ask Questions... More importantly; Humanise yourself, humanise the interviewer. I once had an experience where the sales manager mentioned briefly his interest in psychology - when following up, I didn't just thank him for his time, I listed my favourite psychology books and gave recommendations, I took work out of the equation because he had also briefly mentioned that he looked for symbiosis amongst his team meaning they liked each other...so showing a passion in his personal interest would have been advantageous. By demonstrating to him I was able make those connections I actively demonstrated that I would do so for clients.
If you really want the job then I would suggest full research on the company. Look at the financials, then look at the competitive landscape demonstrate also you know what and who you are up against and what your USP will be.

Be yourself. Be natural. Relate as though it is a friend or family member that you care about. If you don’t care, they won’t either.

In your follow-up message, you should: express your appreciation, highlight your key strengths and fit, address any concerns or objections, and ask for the next steps. Follow up is very important in a Sales role so managers like to see how you follow up. Follow up with a thank you email soon after the interview. The day of for sure in my opinion. Let them know again that you are very interested and look forward to the next step. A lot of hiring managers like when candidates take the initiative and continue to follow up directly with them (Don't be annoying or anything), if you are using a recruiter don't always use the recruiter as a conduit, reach back out yourself if you haven't heard anything in an appropriate time.

Be confident and concise. When asked a question, don't be afraid to take sometime to think how you really want to respond before answering. It helps gather your thoughts and helps you answer in a clear and concise manner.
Remember, in this scenario, YOU are the “thing” you are selling. Treat it the same as any other sales meeting. Prepare, understand your own USP, what the clients needs are and how to successfully marry the two. Keep it simple and have confidence in the only thing you really ever have to sell. Yourself.
Confirm what you hear. Get them to agree each time to what they have said. With every agreement you get closer to the purchase agreement.
