First, realize that there is no 1 thing you need to keep in mind. If strategic planning was that easy it wouldn't be very strategic. Study strategy and planning from a variety of sources. Military strategy, business strategy, strategy for charities or social movements. Becoming a student of strategy is the closest thing to a "one thing" you can do.
