You're designing urban plans for diverse communities. How do you ensure everyone feels included?

Reaching out to get perspectives is a must but too often, developers and designers, tend to speak “to” communities instead of “listening” to them. In many ways completion of a planning project is a signal of just a beginning rather than a conclusion. A plan truly has no value unless it is being implemented and usually implementation falls to others for responsibility. If you as the planner accept this reality, then you have a purpose and responsibility to engage and remain engaged to those responsible for making sure the plan does not gather dust on a shelf. Such an engagement can very well result in clearing up any misunderstanding or misreading of the plan and/or the plan's purpose and that can result in the plan being implemented. Also, you should remain engaged with the community to be sure there is no negative pushback which, in itself, could delay or deep six a plan.
