You’re designing an interactive assessment. What’s the most important resource you need?

One thing that I found helpful in my teaching is to start with the end goal in mind. This means what do you want your students to accomplish. Once this is established, I then use educational technology tools to build the academic vocabulary into the daily lessons. My favorite tools are Quizlet, Kahoot, GimKit, to name a few!

A design plan is a guideline, highlighting the steps through which the project implementation will progress. The design plan should be as general as possible so that the people who will implement the plan should understand it without contacting the people who created it.

Before you can start to think about designing, you must start with the end in mind. I usually ask myself, "What do I want the learners to understand and to be able to do with their new knowledge?"

First few things you should consider: 1. Who is the assignment for? i.e. the audience 2. What are the objectives of the assignment 3. A way to test the efficiency and delivery of the assignment.

Roadmap: It outlines the goals, objectives, target audience, key features, and functionalities, providing a clear direction for everyone involved. Decision-making tool: It aids in making informed decisions throughout the project. Streamlined workflow: A plan helps break down the project into manageable phases with defined timelines and milestones. Resource allocation: It guides resource allocation, enabling you to distribute budget, time, and expertise effectively according to priorities. Shared understanding: It keeps all stakeholders aligned with the project vision, promotes understanding of roles and responsibilities, and minimizes misinterpretations. Feedback mechanism.

A design plan should be comprehensive and well documented so that the people who will implement it will be able to extract any information they need from the design plan. There should be help available to clarify specific critical turning points related to the project so that the implementation and testing people will not come to a halt stage due to lack of knowledge.

Start from the Outcomes and work backwards. Practical Outcomes are the only way to measure progress, success, or, literally, education. So you have to start with what the education package is meant to deliver, and then work out the path to get there. That is what informs the learning structure and journey.

Elaborar um Plano de Projeto para um EPC envolve desafios como: Complexidade do Escopo, Integra??o de Equipes Multidisciplinares, Gerenciamento de Riscos (complexidade em um ambiente dinamico e incerto), Cumprimento de Prazos (estabelecer cronogramas realistas em face de incertezas), Controle de Custos (flutua??es de mercado), Conformidade Regulatória (regulamenta??es complexas) e gerenciar altera??es sem comprometer prazos ou custos.

Planning can be a procrastination. At some point you need to pilot and then go back to the drawing board and fix what did not work.

Two or more humans in a quiet space, depending on whether you are assessing one or more students. An interview, presentation, OSCE, viva, observed performance etc etc surely must be the best form of interactive assessment? It can be mediated by technology, sure, it can be asynchronous (must interactive imply synchronous?) but nothing beats a quiet chat!

Does the tool support AI? Interactive assessments are different when AI is incorporated. Also, one should be mindful of ethical considerations when using AI in assessment, such as ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability. The teacher should be transparent about the use of AI in the assessment process and make sure that there is fairness in the students' results. This is challenging!

About half of the courses I taught were chiropractic skills lab classes. The two things that were ultimately important on exam days were proper training of my lab assistants and a clear grading rubric that both students and faculty had access to before the exam. Psychomotor skills are very difficult to assess without subjectivity...transparency and detailed grading rubrics are critical.

One mistake we make is creating the design plan for the learners. Much of the key learning happens during the creation of a design plan. Don’t rob students of essential learning by creating your own design plan and then requiring students to just go through the steps of executing it. Creating a design plan is the first thing students need to be taught how to do. Second is how to generate many creative potential solutions. Third is how to make a model or prototype of the most promising possibilities. Fourth is sharing the results with others in a clear and compelling manner. Too many teachers do the first two steps and have the students start at the third step. As a result, students are not fully engaged and miss out on key learning.
