My point of view, the best way to identify the source is keeping great logging. Sometimes, while we are under pressure or so confident with ourselves, forget to log our logic. What seems insignificant or simple may trouble others. So remember to log. After reading logs, try to understand faulty logic/state. You can use breakpoints to see the flow, state changes etc. At last, decide if the problem is a single of line or more. Keep in mind, it could be a logical error.

There are mostly 3 common issues in code: 1. Syntax - easy to find 2. Data related - needs some investigation 3. Logic - hard to solve if it's your first time Most of the modern editors have built-in syntax validations. You can look for those clues. Also compilers log what is wrong with your code. For data related issues, you may need to check changes step by step. Data state may not change as intended or parser could be broken. These are simple failure points that comes to mind. For logic, well, it's complicated. If you don't know what you are dealing with then debugging it is a challenge. Even a single logic error in simple algorithms like sorting/searching can cause issues and they seems like data related issues.

There are multiple ways to test your solution. It ranges from unit tests to real world usage tests. Unit tests give opportunity to test both fixed solution and keep dependent parts integrity. That way you cannot broke somewhere else while fixing one. Real world tests are beneficial when you want to test broader solution or impact on the user-end product. For that purpose, you can use whitelisting some users or phased release is a good practice.
