Aligning on sustainability metrics with clients? Here’s the process I use: 1. Start with a materiality assessment to pinpoint priority issues. 2. Choose metrics for those issues using established standards and industry guidance. 3. Review and adjust for any client-requested metrics—if they align with materiality and business needs. 4. Complete a baseline inventory for the selected metrics and identify any data gaps. 5. Finally, validate the results with the client to ensure alignment. This straightforward process ensures focused, relevant, and impactful reporting metrics.

For us at The ESG Institute, aligning on sustainability metrics starts with shared understanding... My Dos & Don’ts: Do: Prioritise metrics that directly support the client’s strategic objectives while demonstrating tangible sustainability progress. I always ensure these metrics are both meaningful and actionable, so clients see how each one drives their overall goals forward. Don’t: Overwhelm clients with too many metrics. Instead, focus on key indicators that will have the most impact, ensuring each metric provides clear value. Involve stakeholders early for alignment and buy-in, which streamlines the reporting process and fosters a sense of shared purpose.

To align on the most crucial sustainability metrics with clients, start by understanding their core business goals and stakeholder expectations. Highlight metrics that provide clear insights into both environmental impact and business value, like carbon emissions, energy efficiency, waste reduction, or supply chain sustainability. Emphasize metrics aligned with industry standards, such as GHG Protocol or SDGs, to ensure comparability and relevance. Collaboratively agree on a streamlined set of metrics that are measurable, meaningful, and actionable, so clients see how tracking these metrics directly supports their strategic objectives.
