Before you debate too much, try out a couple of methods on sample data. Then let the results themselves be a guide as to what methods make the most sense. In my experience, data science debates take up more time and energy than simply running a couple of experiments :)

For example: if your data is structured simple pattern mining could be sufficient while for unstructured data we may require semantic understanding. Bottomline is: you have to pick your hammer(method) according to your nail(data). In other words, the data should guide you about the right data mining technique and not the other way round.
