Understaffing and high patient loads can strain even the most resilient healthcare professionals. To manage your emotions effectively:
How do you stay balanced during challenging times in healthcare?
-
These issues are very common in healthcare these days. Firstly let it settle deep down that you can't handle everything, inasmuch as you would love to, the situation at hand needs you to prioritize. It's better to do a few and do them well than not well at all of them. Knowing yourself and how much you can handle per time is a game changer. Capitalise on your strengths and the areas you excel in. Focusing on weakness and areas of lack will just demoralise you. Ask for help wherever you can, this could be from other departments when they're less busy or it could be for morale support. Take breaks where needed. Working can lead to burnout. Eat, stay hydrated, go get some fresh air. Document your progress and what you've done so far.

Handling emotions during times of understaffing and a heavy patient load requires self-awareness and effective coping strategies. First, it's important to stay calm and prioritize tasks to prevent feeling overwhelmed. Taking brief moments for deep breathing or mindfulness can help maintain focus and composure. Communication is key—sharing concerns with colleagues or supervisors can alleviate some of the emotional burden and lead to collaborative problem-solving. Practicing self-compassion is essential; recognizing that you're doing your best in a challenging situation helps prevent burnout. After the shift, engage in activities that help you decompress, such as exercise, journaling, or spending time with loved ones.

As a nurse high patient loads are chronic! It’s essential to take steps to manage your emotions and prevent burnout. At times, if you can't leave the floor, take a minute to close your eyes, and take deep breaths-inhale for four counts and exhale for four counts, will calm your nervous system and reduce stress. Remind yourself that you're doing the best you can! It's okay to feel overwhelmed at times. Write a to-do list to stay on top of your workload and to set priorities crossing off each task as you complete them. At the end of your shift, take time to unwind. Whether it’s through a short walk, journaling, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, decompressing can help you process the emotions of the day and start fresh tomorrow.
