You’re dealing with a team member who is always negative. What can you do to change their attitude?

It’s important to listen first without any judgement, which helps in understanding what is on the other side of table. To create a comfortable space for the team member so that they can talk about their specific concerns and needs. If we as leaders fail to listen we will never be able to connect and gain that confidence from the team to Open up.

Persons are not born negative. Negativity is always associated with one or more bad experiences that the person has gone through which had a lasting impact on his personality. So, it is important to know these experiences and the emotions associated with these incidences. It becomes easier then to make the person see the other side and help him disassociate with that emotion and in turn with that negativity.

Quite often, those perceived to be 'negative' have a lot to offer. First of all they show it's ok to not be 'happy clappy' positive all the time which can be wearing and inauthentic and thus not open to criticism because it 'spoils the vibe' even while major problems may be occurring. Of course someone can be supported if they see themselves as negative and clearly have some difficulties but remember that some perceived as negative may, by the person themselves simply see themselves as realistic. If a 'big thing' is made of it it can suggest to others as well that they are not allowed to be authentic and 'down' sometimes. it can feel false and superficial to try to 'weed out' those perceived as negative or try to 'change' them.

In my experience, talking to them one on one and listening to them patiently is the most important part. Offer support and do not resist. Acknowledge their positive aspects over time and ask them to talk about how they feel. Give them examples where positive outlooks help others and encourage them.

Empathy is simple and opens up barriers that an individual my have. An empathetic leader leads by example, builds trust and brings so much value to a team and it’s success.

It’s always important to validate someone’s feelings, no matter if you agree with their logic or not. Empathy is truly the cure to many of the team conflict issues that can arise. It’s important to allow a colleague to feel heard and confirm that you understand where they’re coming from. The next step is providing your perspective to encourage positivity and ultimately being an optimistic force on the team supporting and encouraging your coworker. You never know what someone’s dealing with in their personal life, so I think it’s important to be cordial, professional, and empathetic above all.

Your goal should never be to change the person but to let the person see a wider perspective that will allow them to change. Holding the belief that you are set to change someone's attitude can be frustrating especially if you don't see the change you want. Empathy is important, it's about making them feel they are not alone, and you are there ready to support if they need it. It's not about understanding how they feel because you can never do.

Empathy not only shows you care, but perhaps more importantly, it shows you are listening. A lot of time people just need to feel heard. Once they feel heard, their perspective may change in a positive way.

Empathy is key to changing how a team works together. As a leader, I make sure everyone feels listened to and important. This makes people feel like they belong and encourages them to speak up and respect each other. By truly listening to what team members say without judging them, we create a foundation for new ideas and working well together. Empathy isn't just about understanding how someone feels; it's about showing that their ideas and efforts are valued. This attitude helps solve problems and builds a strong, united team. When we all feel free to share our thoughts and ideas, we work better together, grow as a team, and reach our goals.

In my experience, people usually avoid difficult conversations but it is critical to be constructive and focus on behaviors and outcomes versus personality, opinions and emotions. As noted above, in leading with empathy and developing an honest relationship, it becomes easier to focus on respectful feedback that can help the negative team member gain more perspective. I have witnessed more action when the consequences of their behavior or clearly spelled out as well as the commitment to working together to bring about positive change.

We need to understand his/her perspective and respect the thought process. Sometimes negativity is deep rooted due to few circumstances and that can be worked out. In my view, regular discussions and giving constructive feedback would definitely help.

I would be direct and let them know how they are being perceived. Ask if there is anything you can help with. I would stress that having a positive mindset is critical in achieving goals and objectives. Negative thoughts are a waste of time and can affect and bring other team members down. Everyone encounters challenges, it is how you approach and respond to adversity that matters.

We can offer specific examples of the negative behavior and its consequences, focusing on observable actions rather than personal attacks. We should also highlight the importance of maintaining a positive and supportive team environment.

When providing constructive feedback to a team member who is consistently negative, focus on specific behaviors rather than generalizations, offer support and resources for improvement, and encourage a growth mindset by highlighting opportunities for positive change.

" What you give, will get the same" Even after negative attitude, we should continue to focus on positive actions and attitude only or I can say we should only target on their good things. Therefore we can boost their confidence and can change their attitude to see things positively.

Grace. The rest falls in line. There's not a lot else here. Just be kind and support them where they ask for it. Responsibilities of management notwithstanding, be a kind, compassionate individual and give them space. And lots of grace.

When working with a more often negative response, reinforce and reward the positive. Try to create a positive team culture with the focus on the group. If the group is positive overall, the one negative will stick out further and hopefully mesh with coworkers in the long run.

We should encourage the team member to reflect on the reasons behind their negativity and how it may be affecting their interactions with others. Help them identify any underlying issues or stressors that may be contributing to their attitude.

It's a healthy reminder that we cannot control other people, only ourselves. When we are no longer able to change a situation, and we are consistently disappointed with a personality conflict with a colleague, we are challenged to change ourselves. I prefer to focus my energy on setting boundaries and communicating my needs clearly, rather than being consistently upset by someone else's actions.

When dealing with a team member who is consistently negative, I find it important to have a private conversation with them. I express my concerns about their negativity and how it impacts the team. During this conversation, I set clear expectations for their behavior, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive and constructive attitude. I offer support and resources to help them address any underlying issues contributing to their negativity. I also make sure to regularly check in to assess progress and provide feedback. If the behavior persists despite my efforts, I consider involving HR or higher management for further intervention.

Two things I've found helpful when dealing with negative behavior at work. One is setting clear expectations from the beginning. Let the team know what is and isn't acceptable. Identify and address unacceptable behavior immediately—don't let it fester, as it can change the team culture overall. Then you have a whole new challenge. The other is holding people accountable for their actions. Once we've agreed to the expectations, I explain the consequences of unacceptable (negative) behavior. This is also agreed to so there are never any surprises on the actions to be taken if the behavior continues. Everyone is an adult, and expected to behave as an adult. Treat everyone with respect and remain focused on the mission.

Daily meetings provide an opportunity to provide feedback, set clear expectations, and advise the team where you are at on the journey. Some course correction is normal and a daily meeting(10 minutes) is the perfect way to address. Employees that are having a negative impact on the team may warrant some additional attention but if you are tuned in to your people this will be a rare exception. Your energy and enthusiasm is the beginning of setting the example to demonstrate that you too are part of the solution!

Many years ago, I was a member of a phenomenal team of people that had the most amazing chemistry, with the exception of one person. The cause of the negativity was their refusal to change and adapt. It got to the point where HR was asked to intervene. And although I regret not being more direct with this individual, it actually unified our team and this person left the team of their own accord and went to another department. It wasn’t until years later that they realized that their negativity was the cause of the disruption on the team. I don’t think there is anything I could have done to change their attitude if they were unwilling to change. However, being adaptable to change is what makes a difference in situations like this.

In my large company experience, there are so many resources that can assist in efforts to support negative team members. Whether you lean on training, HR or supplement third party sources. You can lean on others vs. assisting in a vacuum. Everyone benefits from a team effort.

As leaders, we often try to do it all, which can be dangerous and ineffective. Knowing when to seek support is crucial to achieving the desired result and resolution. For example, I'm not the most empathetic leader; some situations require more empathy than others. For that reason, I have professionals I can lean on when I need that type of support. This is important for the other individual but more important to you as protecting your peace of mind and well-being should always be a priority.

We should not hesitate to engage other team members in addressing the issue collaboratively. Encourage a supportive team environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their concerns and working together to find solutions.

No one knows it all. it is important to seek help when we are exhausted. Someone might have a better understanding of the team member and maybe able to provide a different perspective to the person's character.

I think this blends with having boundaries. You need a referee sometimes. You need an unbiased opinion. You need a mentor. You need support. You need a phone a friend option. You need cheerleaders. You need neigh sayers. If you don’t have these options, do you really have a high-po team? Or team at all.

You cannot always change other people's behavior or mindsets. Your time and energy might be better spent focusing on your own. Be the example of the positive attitude that you want to see. Practice mindfulness. Talk to a coach or mentor who can help you process your experiences. Sometimes negativity is nothing more than white noise that you can block out. If someone's behavior is directly affecting your ability to perform your job responsibilities, it might be time for some conflict resolution steps.

All of these recommendations are so important, but an additional key element is to always behave with kindness and integrity, operating from your core values, even when the other party is being unkind. This is hardest to do when the other person is spinning the narrative to portray you in a negative light, but in the end, it is important not to stoop to the other party's level of behavior.

Another perspective for this is, Negative leadership breeds negativity within a team, stifling morale, productivity, and collaboration. Behaviors like micromanagement, lack of communication, favoritism, or lack of empathy create a toxic work environment. This undermines trust, erodes motivation, and leads to disengagement and high turnover rates. Conversely, positive leadership fosters a supportive and empowering work culture, where team members feel valued, motivated, and able to perform at their best.
