The need for well trained, well vetted, experienced cyber security resources is a fact for both the for profit and non-profit sectors in the United States today. Cyber criminals see profit motives in attacking both, and unfortunately non-profits may have the disadvantage of having fewer resources to combat these threats. That doesn't make the information they store, process, or transmit nor their missions any less important. In order to better protect non-profits from cyber crime, hacktivism, and terrorism government should legislate, recruit, train, retain and deploy organizations whereby volunteers and civil servants can help non-profits, municipalities, and small businesses overcome cyber vulnerabilities and recover from attacks.

ANY organization that is connected to the broader world electronically needs cybersecurity, just like it doesn't matter who you are or where you are going, you need to wear some sort of seat restraint in a motor vehicle. Attackers often do not know or care the nature of a business when they find vulnerable systems to exploit. They only care what they can get out of it: a foothold or way to further infiltrate, something of intrinsic financial value to steal/exfiltrate, a way to hold the entity's data and/or systems for ransom, or a new IP/IP range from which to run further attacks. The fact that these non-profit entities often have far fewer human resources vs. their "cash value" is an even bigger reason.

The reality is that Non-Profits simply do not have the budget to fund the same tools, processes and people that a for-profit company can. At some point in one's career, money is not really the end state and neither are growth/promotion aspirations. That is not to say that there is no motivation - quite the opposite. Quality of life, culture and being able to give back all end up playing a huge part in a technology leader's professional life. That comes at a cost of compensation being adjusted accordingly, but it also unlocks a tremendous amount of time. ...as we all know, time is something that you cannot make more of and once it is gone...it is gone.

Not everything is about money. It’s easier if you have it, sure, but if you have the means - help a non-profit that is close to you. You won’t lose everything as the non-profit will most likely recommend you to people. And if they don’t recommend you, at least you did a good thing by helping.
