I’ll be honest, I agree software choice is important (it is to be sure), however, there is often a lot of focus on the tools. In my experience, an artist who is solid with the fundamentals and design theory can do a lot with very little, while those who rely on the tools are often limited in some capacity. So for me, the first thing to focus on is the craft and theory that makes the craft. As far as software goes, I often targeted comprehensive creative software that was in use at studios I liked and admired. That led me down the path of Maya, C4D, Unreal Engine, and all things Adobe. Those titles are widely used around the world with large professional networks so I knew there was always learning and work potential with those tools.

Additionally, tools like Adobe Animate, Toon Boom Harmony, and Procreate can enhance your workflow and provide specialized features for different styles of motion graphics. Experimenting with these tools will help you find the best combination for your specific needs and creative vision.

Understanding and applying color theory is essential in making your motion graphics pop. Colors can evoke emotions, draw attention, and create harmony within your animation. Sound by itself is always more powerful than a silent visual. When working with sound, one of the best approaches is to do a sound design pass on a very early rough draft. If you pretend that the draft is as good as the visuals are ever going to get, you can put yourself in the position of 'rescuing' it with sound design. Then, once the sound design is in place, you can move back into the visual design role, and design to compliment the sound. In your final pass, your job is just to try and balance the two, making sure they don't clash, but using emotional resonance and your gut to tell you which one should take priority in what moment.

The composition of your motion graphics plays a crucial role in guiding the viewer's eye and organizing the visual elements in a pleasing manner. Look everywhere else but in motion graphics. If you only follow, study, search, and research other motion graphic artists, you will only ever learn more about what other are already doing. In order to get ahead of trends, create new styles, and understand what works and what doesn't, you need to be looking at every other visual medium, and pulling out the elements that are working in THOSE areas. Once you figure out how to integrate them into your own work, you can then start to explore forward and iterate without being derivative of other artists that you are inspired by.

Everything and anything you can do to communicate to the viewer that a human was involved in the creation of the graphics. Not necessarily by introducing flaws, but by considering details that would trigger emotions, and potentially indicate that they are sharing a moment with another human being. In other eras, the recommendations would have been things like 'add a drop shadow to everything' and 'add film grain' etc, in order to propose the idea that the motion graphics were a 'real object'. However, in an era where things are allowed to be clean, what is it that you can do to make the viewer feel 'another human being made this for me, and this is how I know'.
