I think there are two success factors to assess risk in a planning exercise. 1- You need to stress test the assumptions in your P&L. Anyone in the FP&A game who knows what they're doing knows that a Plan is only as good as the assumptions you use. For example, you assume wages go up 4% per year over 5 years, and a certain headcount of new FTE. A stress factor would be, what if wages go up 6%? How much would that cost? 2- You need to stress test your investment portfolio based on 2-3 macro scenarios. What if S&P500 goes down 15%, 20%, 30% - how would that affect your plans? My focus is on practical dollar impacts. From there you can hedge accordingly.

With that knowledge, you can position your portfolio to protect your enterprise by investing that portion of the portfolio for safety, not growth. That means (to me) bonds and cash. The remaining amount of the portfolio can pursue growth via equities and alternatives. Remember, at the end of the day, the most important risk factor is maintaining LIQUIDITY. You run out of cash, you are out of business. Need to have cash available in < 5 days, and you need open credit lines to weather any storm.

Hedge Against Financial Risk ? Currency and Interest Rate Hedging: If your business operates in multiple currencies or is sensitive to interest rate fluctuations, implement financial instruments such as hedges to mitigate the associated risks.
