As a copywriter, my battles often revolve around nailing the perfect balance between creativity and clarity. Wrangling deadlines can feel like herding cats, but it's a challenge I thrive on. Understanding diverse client expectations and adapting my tone accordingly is a daily jigsaw puzzle. Taming the temptation to overcomplicate language and keeping it simple yet impactful is an eternal struggle. And, of course, feedback loops can be a difficult ride. Despite these common conundrums, the thrill of words keeps me on this wild writing journey.

I once worked with a Marketing Director who always stressed: A junk brief = a junk outcome. In an ideal setting, accountability works both ways. Not always true, though. So it's up to the copy creators to ask the right questions to build a thorough brief.

Clarity is very important in writing a conversation worthy copy- For that you need to know- what is the product/service is all about who are the target audience how its going to help them what they have to do to get it These are the basic questions, but you should go beyond these to understand the product first, only the you can make a copy that can emotionally connect with people. What is the purpose behind this product long term goal vision of the brand Basically, ask more questions then you required, so you can get clarity, what to add and what to omit.

The biggest road block for creators is timelines. Creativity needs time, but when you set targets for delivery that's when stress and anxiety blocks your creativity. Personally, close to nature is what brings me new ideas- taking a walk, watering plants in my garden , or just sit in the park for few minutes help me clear my thoughts. But it may differ for each individual- you can try music, read a book, refer other creators, discuss with mentors etc. But if it is exhausting, please take rest. Remember, a healthy body possess a healthy mind.

Take a walk, brew a cup of coffee, or indulge in some shameless eavesdropping at your local cafe. Inspiration often strikes when you least expect it. And if all else fails, try the Pomodoro Technique—set a timer for 25 minutes of focused writing followed by a short break. It's like interval training for your brain!

The best solution to writer's block? Make a list. Of anything. It can be related to your project, or something more creative, like '10 things I wish I'd said' or '5 things I'm learning to live without'. Getting something down takes away the horror of the blank page, and making lists helps different parts of the brain crank into gear.

I tell my son this all the time because he has trouble getting started on any kind of writing for school. Just start. It doesn't have to be the intro. Just start anywhere. Think about some examples or points you want to make and start explaining them. Then once you have enough meat down, you can begin filling in the spaces around it.

The worst thing your copy can do is bore your readers. It's almost like you disrespect their time. A common issue for copywriters is creating engaging content that captures the reader’s attention Avoid clichés, jargon, or vague language. Instead, make your copy specific and relevant. Use: storytelling, humor, metaphors, or posing questions.

When you lean too hard on clichés, jargon, or keep things too vague, your copy may end up sounding uninspired. To dodge this, make your writing grabs your reader by throwing in some real-life stories, cracking a joke, painting a picture with metaphors, or poking your reader with a thought-provoking question. Or - better again - get down to brass tacks by laying out the problem, your killer solution, and exactly why it's a game-changer.

Focus more on storytelling than just bombarding the reader with facts, especially in the introduction. The first line has to capture the reader's attention. Make sure you add a little bit of 'you' in the piece to make it stand out. Then read the piece as a stranger would and observe if it interests you.

One of the challenges is striking the balance when it comes to specialist language and insider jargon. On the one hand it's vital not to overdo corporate clichés and NEVER assume your whole audience knows your obscure acronyms. On the other hand, it's important to avoid patronising your readers and/or revealing the copy has been written by a "clueless" outsider. The solution: 1. Research your audience 2. Read around the field 3. Sprinkle in just the right amount of creative flair while respecting how your audience communicates with each other on a daily basis

Tools like Grammarly or ProWritingAid are like your personal copy-editing ninjas, catching those sneaky errors before they sabotage your message. Remember, precision in language is the hallmark of a true wordsmith!

When I started copywriting as a fresher, the only boring thing about it was proofreading. But gradually I did realize the importance once I came to know how a single spelling mistake can create judgment and ruin the whole reputation of an agency. So keen whole-minded proofreading multiple times is a helpful tool. Also, from my personal experience proofreading by a second person other than the writer can help a lot in it.

Write the way you'd like your favorite brands to market their products, don't start off with "this copy has to sell" mindset. Counterintuitive, I know. But it works! We all come across ads or campaigns that leave a lasting impression on our minds. Refer to those to understand why those ad copies clicked with you and use that to guide your writing. Don't be predictable - take the risks!

I learnt this by talking to experienced cover designers: create more options from the get go. That sounds counterintuitive. It is also literally extra work. Except when you wonder why a trade book cover designer, one of the busiest in the country right now, would say that. Writing is difficult, takes time, effort, and practice. But guess what also does? Art. Painting. Design. What may require more labour to put together in a discrete instance will actually save time in the longer run. A client will appreciate choices, and there is both an objectively lesser chance of them rejecting both options and a psychological (& perhaps slightly anecdotal) probability that they will not be ill-disposed towards a plethora of options presented to them.
