The first thing to do as you prepare for the interview is to plan your response. To do that, write down your answers to the following questions: 1. What did I like about previous jobs? 2. What activities did I enjoy in my previous jobs? 3. What type of work energizes me? 4. What did I like dislike about previous jobs? 5. What tasks did I dislike in previous jobs? 6. If I could do anything, what would I do? 7. What would my dream job and dream company look like? By looking at your honest responses to these questions and then looking at the values and beliefs of the new company, you can better understand yourself and figure out what you want a new job and with that, why you are considering leaving your current job.

Inevitably, there are reasons for parting ways with an employer, and there are numerous ways to describe those reasons positively. One of the more common reasons is that it’s not a good fit for you. Highlighting what those reasons are and how a prospective new role is a better fit can be a positive way to emphasize why you are seeking a change.

The second rule of thumb is to highlight your career goals and aspirations, and how they align with the new opportunity. You can explain what you're looking for in your next role, such as new skills, technologies, projects, or domains. Understand that with this question interviewer wants to understand your perception about things , your future goals, your limitations, your adaptability in a company culture, your intention of staying long in your next gig. There is no harm to be honest about your reason of leaving a company, but you need to know how you present it, how you can assure the interviewer that your decision to move on is the right one. So keeping the answer goal focused is the key- you can highlight that your goals are evolving and current organization does not look like a place where these goals can flourish. Bad mouthing your employer is a absolute no but highlighting challenges in your current job can be done but in a professional way.

Being a HR person- what I love to hear from candidates as an answer- Where they show respect towards their current employer, still cleverly put forward the points which made them to look for another job, and give me a sneak peak of what they have in mind for their future employer. As this help me to understand if that candidate would fit right in my organization or not. Also what his/her priorities are. Whether candidate's future plans align with my organization's growth plan. So candidate should learn that these questions are not to grill candidates but to help hiring manager in making their decisions.
