Aligning your personal passions with your job is definitely one way of approaching strategic communications. But this is not a prerequisite - for me more than anything it is knowing what your audience wants/needs to hear that is the most important - if your passion for your subject is more than theirs, there is a risk of actually undermining the message. The most successful comms come when you tell people what they want to hear, not just what you think they should know...

Let's keep it simple: 1. Understanding: Do you understand that information is not communication? 2. Cycle: Do you know what the communication cycle means? 3. Interest: Are you interested in communication, messaging, and influencing people's perceptions? 4. Skills: Do you know and have basic communication skills? 5. Values: How do you feel when public opinion is skewed against the facts you have confirmed? The level of ignorance of what communication really is is alarming, hence, taking up a role in strategic communication, particularly strategic communication is a great need in the world.

Just like any career, consider if you have the right skills and knowledge. This will not only help you do the work but also help you understand your organisation's communication needs and expectations. Strategic communication is very specialised. The right skills and knowledge will guide you into communicating the best message using the correct channels to the target audience and at the right time to shape what people think of your employer or organisation.

En mi opinión, lo principal es sentir pasión y disfrutar de la comunicación y todos sus matices. Además, ser una persona con aptitudes sociales, capacidad para construir relaciones, empática, con capacidad de análisis y muy observador. Una persona que busque soluciones, que sea humilde para aceptar opiniones diferentes y aún así buscar acuerdos. Hay muchas herramientas que se aprenden en el camino, pero contar con habilidades y valores claves hará el camino más sencillo.

A solid research background is necessary in addition to good writing skills and some creativity. It helps to have some experience in media too to be good at strategic communications.

You need to be skilful at meta-observing, meta-listening, meta-talking and meta-convincing :-) Strategic communications is not about just transmitting one message from point A to point B. It is about being able to see and evaluate the context, to direct the efforts towards the goals while activating the values, to achieve a win-win result and an opportunity to prolong the mutual benefit.

En la vida y también mucho en el trabajo, la coherencia es clave. Comenzar por ser coherentes con nosotros mismos es un ABC. Como comunicadora estratégica, nunca podría ser buena trabajando por algo en lo que no creo, porque la creatividad tiene mucho que ver con los afectos. Si solo trabajo con la mente, podré hacer las cosas bien, pero difícilmente me destaque con ideas innovadoras como las que surgen cuando la mente y el corazón se encuentran, porque nos importa genuinamente el desafío por resolver.

I've had social media managers tell me what they believe is the most effective tactic for sharing a single product, but when asked how best to use that to contribute to the higher level communication objectives, they haven't considered the bigger picture or how to adjust their tactics to meet those objectives. You can't stovepipe your efforts. You have to ensure communication efforts are connected and working with awareness of others' efforts in order to effectively deliver organizational messaging cohesively.
