Be a joyful builder. Learning to code, develop product, or engineer demands a passion for learning. The world of development changes too fast to be considered as a clock in and clock out job. So, build something. Get involved in a project that you care about and build your skills based on the stack and culture of that project. After you've contributed to a real project, you may be qualified to learn enough to be a professional software engineer.

To succeed as a software engineer in the next decade, you'll need a strong foundation in programming languages like Python, JavaScript, or Java, expertise in cloud computing and DevOps practices, proficiency in data structures and algorithms, excellent problem-solving abilities, continuous learning mindset, effective communication skills, and adaptability to evolving technologies and methodologies. Additionally, skills in machine learning, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and user experience design will become increasingly valuable.

The most important thing you should work on is developing fundamental skills like analytical and logical thinking which help in problem-solving. Writing code is just a way to transform our thought process into working software and this can be done using any language. All the high-level language has similar fundamental building blocks and you just need to learn syntax to use them effectively. Happy Coding !!

To succeed as a software engineer in the next decade, you'll need proficiency in multiple programming languages (such as Python, JavaScript, and Go), and a strong understanding of modern web development frameworks (like React and Node.js). Equally important are skills in cloud computing (AWS, Azure, GCP), DevOps practices (CI/CD, containerization with Docker and Kubernetes), and cybersecurity fundamentals. Alongside technical expertise, effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to continuously learn about emerging technologies (like AI, blockchain, and quantum computing) will be crucial for adapting to the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

The three high-level patterns that I highly recommend to study at first are the hexagonal architecture (ports and adapters), Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and Event Sourcing. One crucial element of design that can make or break a software project is unnecessary coupling. P&A and DDD directly adress this. As for storage, I truly believe ES should be our default architecture, as it is well adapted to small projects and scales beautifully. Contrary to other storage architectures, it lets us use different storages at different stages of the project (which SQL and NoSQL databases make extremely difficult).

To design software, you need to understand what users NEED, not what they ask for. Too often, users will attempt to design the software for you. This is rarely a good idea. Do not insult the users. They want to help. Encourage users to describe the process, not the solution. If they want to design the solution, ask them WHY that step is done and how it connects.

Nowadays Learning a programming language is not so difficult but focusing on software design and architecture is one of the most important knowledge that a software engineer should have cause we are on a world that depends now on a very high performance and scalable apps and one of the things that should be known by any developer is micro-services architecture cause it's widely used to achieve almost no down time with high performance apps and one of the most known books that discuss this is "Building Microservices by Sam Newman".

All systems that are built have design patterns. Often, what you are trying to build has been built is some way before. So, understanding the patterns that have come before enables you to successfully create new systems.

When I was working on a project, we had to build a system that could handle a large number of users without crashing. It was a big challenge. We had to plan carefully, thinking about what tools and technology to use. We spent a lot of time discussing how to organize the code in a logical way so that it would be easy to understand and update later. We also made sure to follow good design practices like keeping things separate and making sure each part of the code did one thing well. As we worked, we kept communicating with each other and with the people who would be using the system. It was a lot of work, but in the end, we built something that was reliable and could handle whatever was thrown at it.

A clear understanding of the Test Pyramid (UT, Component Testing,E2E testing etc) with scope covered in each level would be required to achieve holistic quality of application. Focus on what doesn't change irrespective of technologies. In the case of software testing and debugging that would be: 1. Building the skill to elicit potential test cases for a piece of functionality (notice I didnt say code) from a user perpective 2. Testing for edge cases 3. Building the discipline to test what you write and accepting bugs raised by others 4. Learning how to traverse application logs, understand log levels, connecting cause and effect, and zeroing in on the root cause 5. Understanding observability metrics and creating layers of signals to catch issues early on based on trends before diving deep into the logs

It is very important for a software engineer to be proficient in software testing and debugging techniques like unit testing, integration testing, regression testing and performance testing. These testing techniques will ensure the development of functionalities or a new software works well and causes no issues to the existing build.

If you are not braking it, you are not testing. This is the best way to understand and find the root of any problem. Visual studio is easy to use and very effective and I highly recommend it to anyone new to testing software.

A great place to start with testing is Test-Driven Development (TDD): 1. Write the smallest test that would fail. It could just be calling a missing function, compilation failure is failure. This is called RED because most testing frameworks show failure in red. 2. Write the smallest code that would pass the test. Don't try to anticipate the next steps, write the simplest code at that point, even if it's not well structured. This is called GREEN. 3. Now that you have working code that's thoroughly tested, you can refactor the code. At that point, don't add new features, don't add new tests, just "go from green to green", that is from code that passes all tests to code that still passes those tests. Repeat this RED/GREEN/REFACTOR cycle.

Most companies say that they are Agile but none is truly agile to its fullest aside from very few companies implementing XP to the extreme. That is not always effective and generates high turn over rates. Just adapt to a non agile agile flow with different cadences and management styles.

Less a methodology, more a mindset - seek to understand holistically. Why is the functionality you are being asked to build necessary? What business value does it bring to your application/company? How will it interact with other pieces of your tech stack? Dangerous engineers have a wide breadth of understanding, and are able to flex their thinking beyond the scope of their code. Its easy to engineer solutions to business problems when you know how the whole thing ticks. You might need help putting some of the gears into place, but knowing the general gist is incredibly valuable, and an easy way to begin edging up the engineering ladder.

They are just that. Metodologies and thus guidelines for working in software development. What they are not is gospel that should always be followed to the letter. Knowing every detail of everything is a waste of time, and you really should just focus on the one that in use at your place of work, or the place you want to work. And focusing too much on it during interviews is a distraction from the real issues of matching personal and professional skills to the position.

Empathy for your users. In most cases, they will not be software developers. You need to be able to empathize with them, listen to them, and understand that they probably do things in ways that you haven't anticipated - and it is causing a lot of bugs. Being able to explain complex technical concepts in layman's terms is also very critical for engineers. You will be communicating all the time with non-technical people, or people with different technical backgrounds. If you can explain to them how the system works, but also your constraints and the risks, you will be able to defend your budget and allocate resources more efficiently.

Learn how to communicate the technical to non-technical. People like results, so that's a good place to focus. How does it impact them? Visual aids like graphs and charts make digesting data easier. Lastly encourage people to ask questions, you may have gone too technical, over-simplified, or glossed over something you assumed to be obvious.

Be a creative problem solver. I love developers who take a problem, understand the cause, and come up with interesting and creative solutions to the problems. This has repeated proven to be more valuable than anything else on this list. Anyone can learn a language or can follow a methodology, but the ability to understand and define a problem, as well as its solution will make you stand out.

We have the stakeholders who are not always technical, so we need to present by considering the audience. Having stats to support your statements will help the audience to connect the dots well.

In order of importance(for my experience): Learn how to ask for help. Learn how to learn from constructive feedback. Learn how to think like a user would. Learn how to be specific and concise at the same time.

Stay curious and embrace lifelong learning. The field of software engineering is constantly evolving, so it's essential to stay updated with the latest technologies, tools, and best practices. Network with other professionals, attend conferences, workshops, and online courses, and seek mentorship to accelerate your learning and career growth. Remember, success in software engineering requires a combination of technical expertise, creativity, and a continuous commitment to learning and improvement.
