You're considering a career in Risk Management. What are the most important things to keep in mind?

Be practical and realistic. My criticism of ERM practioners (before I became one myself) was that the risks were either generic or too theoretical and did not reflect a credible understanding of business. You want risk management to drive change and be part of management discussions. Understand the business and its environment, its strategy and objectives, and then develop relevant risks.

Use good ways to lessen risks such as avoiding the-m, lessening them, sharing the-m with others, or accepting them. Cle-arly share risks with those involved. Improve- at looking at data to see patterns ove-r time. Adjust to changing situations. Work together with othe-r teams. Always keep le-arning and do what's right.

Be patient. You don't have to go straight there with a formal qualification. Learn business first, learn the organisation, get a grounding in how things work (or why they don't). Be curious and speak to people around you in all different kinds of roles. A grounding in organisational culture and psychology is absolutely invaluable. Be holistic, not narrow, in your self-improvement. Read (quality) current affairs publications. Familiarise yourself with topics and trends like ESG/sustainability, cyber security, AI and demographics. Don't just obsess over taxonomies and methodology. Be realistic. Risk managers rarely end up as CEO. But there is a huge amount of value associated with doing this job well.

En mi opinión, para que te vaya bien en gestión de riesgos se requiere, entre otras cosas, una combinación de habilidades técnicas, analíticas e interpersonales pues el trabajo se desarrolla en variados frentes. Es necesario estudiar permanentemente y estar dispuesto a jornadas con mucha interacción con distintas áreas y niveles de las organizaciones en las cuales te desempe?es.

The best risk managers have deep experience in the sector or industry they’re assessing. Maybe they were practitioners on the front lines of the business, building or manage products or services. AND these people are able to recognize that there are many ways to deliver that product or service and are always thinking about a better way. It’s harder to come in as a generalist without much specialized knowledge of the industry you’re addressing.

In addition to all this, I believe the most important trait a risk professional should have/understand is the psychology to influence obtaining of the right information from risk owners across the business. This ensures that you are identifying and assessing the correct risks for the business while aiding decisioning.

Volatility is a feature rather than a bug. So a model to deal with volatility is vital. Risk Management means everything. Most models ignore volatility. In 2020 equities fell by 32%.
