You can also consider specific industries, sectors, or types of risks to further tailor your career path.

Risk management is a broad concept and specialized, meaning only a few people work on this. For people interested in this field, the best advice is to value a company that has a structured area for risk management, in such a way the candidate can learn and then decide. Just make sure about the industry you are attracted as RM may mean different things in insurance, financial or other type of industries.

Tone from the top is important when it comes to risk management. It’s good to understand how management view the risk management and where does risk report to. Always good to have the risk division has the reporting line for the Board Level risk committee in addition to the CEO. Based on that, you could judge the tone that set by Board.

Culture isn’t an important factor. It’s the single most important factor. If we’re not drawing a company through our own values sieve then what’s the point in having values. If you are a starter, you need to be sure about your career goal. Often a lot of freshers choose what comes their way. Have seen few focussed on what they want to do. Having said that freshers always have edge in changing tracks in initial few years of their career. They can develop their interest in between. In mid career, always prefer job profile over compensation or other perks. This brings immense learning on the unexplored areas. As far as selecting a company is concerned, I love to see that how much company is open to invest in you, whether you are an expert for them in a domain, or you are looked upon as a resource who can build something new from scratch. You need to take some risks while making choices.

Corporate culture is a principle consideration. Leadership might say one thing, culture says another. Understand the balance. Then ask yourself can I be apart of this team? Can I make change with this leadership and culture? Are both open or closed? Are a team? Then go from there…

All face risk & without risk, rewards are less likely. The flip side of this is that too much risk can lead to business failure. Risk management allows a balance to be struck between taking risks and reducing them. Through risk management assessment, identifies risks, reports them, assesses their severity, and mitigates them with a proper business continuity plan.
