No one can understand the ERP better than who knows the business processes and how the ERP can accommodate the needs of business into system . Any system need three Pillars : People + Processes + System , any of those missed the cycle will have challenges to govern the whole business .

I think you need to have "real" experience working in "real" industries. ERP solutions are the technology enabler, but you need to have an excellent understanding of the business operations, processes and workflows in order to provide advice to your clients. Soft skills such as listening and asking great questions are also essential.

There are some great comments here and I agree, communication skills are vital, but specifically listening. Also, there is a big difference between 'consulting' and 'configuring' i.e. ERP consultants who truly consultant, add-value and challenge clients thinking on business process (respectfully, with client's best interests front and centre, and supported with experience and credibility) as opposed to focusing on billable hours, are the stand-outs. Also, those who have been on the 'client side' and have relevant industry experience combined with product/system knowledge are highly sought after (in my opinion). The best consultants I know (and I am lucky to work with many currently) were end/key users prior to becoming ERP consultants.

Knowledge of the business that your customer is in. Especially the relevant processes and specific characteristics within that business. The goal of ERP is to support these processes. So knowledge of (and by focussing on a limited type of businesses also over time experience with) these processes is key. Even more important than functional or technical ERP knowledge in my opinion.

Good technical skills can make you a super star in an ERP career. The ERP product ( Oracle , SAP, Infor M3, , MS Dynamics etc) in itself isn’t complete. ERP is an eco system comprising of the core product plus many other technologies. The ability to use compatible technologies in extending the capabilities of the ERP requires good technical skills.

An ERP professional needs to have an advanced technical ERP knowledge. A flexible ERP has many software configuration settings which must be mastered and adjusted to satisfy all or most of the client's ERP requirements. The integration of ERP modules accessing a common database improves automated transaction processing and avoids redundant tasks. An ERP can be integrated or interfaced with other applications including third party software. As a last resort to satisfy client's requirements which are still missing, an ERP can be customized in such a way that future updating and upgrading of the ERP is still practically achievable. It is recommended to use only customization tools or interfaced third party software certified by the ERP vendor.

In general the most important asset a person needs to have in order to become a great consultant is what I like to call the 'Consulting genome'. In essence never ending curiosity, the ability to analyze complex situations and - most importantly - being able to communicate in different ways with the various stakeholders in an ERP project, always choosing the right 'level' of detail.

In my experience the most important thing in a consulting project is dealing with people's expectations and delivering according to that. For this, communications skills are a key factor.

I have hired over 500+ people in my 20+ year career, and communication and ethos are the first things I look for. Not to mention that we work in a fantastic world where people all over the globe come to build their careers, so it is essential for me that people gel and build a relationship within a given team. Communication refers to taking in requirements and effectively acting on them, resulting in a successful project. I would say that effective communication is essential.

Another thing to consider while working on a solution is to design in such a way that is future proof. You have to be able to analyze and foresee the shortcomings. It should be flexible to accommodate future changes.

A fourth important skill for an ERP career is analytical skills. You need to be able to analyze and interpret data and information from various sources, such as reports, surveys, interviews, and observations. You need to be able to identify problems and opportunities, as well as to propose and evaluate solutions and alternatives. You also need to be able to measure and monitor the impact and outcomes of ERP initiatives, as well as to report and present your findings and recommendations. Analytical skills can help you make informed and data-driven decisions that improve the performance and value of ERP.

Analytical skills are fundamental in contributing to the success of an ERP implementation. Using these skills will help the understanding of key requirements and help prioritise solutions for these that focus on meeting critical KPI’s. Analytical skills will also help solve necessary detailed ERP implementation challenges including developing cutover/transition plans that minimise business operational impact.

Analytical skills help to identify business process weaknesses before designing improved processes, find gaps between the client's ERP requirements and the ERP capabilities during ERP vendor selection, determine the most appropriate implementation strategy for the project to be successful, define the key performance indicators for better decision making and resolve any ERP-related issue during and after ERP implementation.

Analytical skills are the core competency of an ERP consultant. In both implementation projects and ongoing support a consultant will be confronted with new problems. New updates and new releases will create new technical issues. Every industry and company has their own processes. Other skills can be substituted to a certain extend. A developer can help with technical issues, a co-worker can help with parameters. A project manager can take over the communication. A solution architect can help with the overall concept for a project or business.

Learning Skill is continous skill , day by day in ERP line you learn new things new scenerios , new challanges. ERP Consultant should always open to learn new things and face the new challanges. from this attitude ERP consultant can enhance their abilities.

Managing stakeholders could take up to 50% of the effort. They can make or break an ERP project. Do not underestimate the importance of communications.

Change Management and Focus on User Adoption is of paramount importance in a successful ERP program. This means if you have the ability to drive change , explain complex problems in simple terms and love training people , you can have a good career in ERP.

Get within the community! Ensure that you are not just looking for a job but want to give back to the community and provide value. Having all the skills in the world is excellent, but having the desire to learn and provide the best for the ERP community can't be taught. Naturally, you will learn more from other people than from watching any video. Experience plays a massive part in success.

In my experience, first critical aspect is the business skill or what I say, situational knowledge. How best you can think of managing / addressing the situation in ERP, makes you unique. In addition other aspect which we undermine is the communication skills. We take granted this part after having technical know how. But many ERP implementations fail because of this!! Hence need to master these two in addition to other aspects .
