Additionally, the account manager is tasked with identifying growth opportunities within existing clients, negotiating contracts, and resolving any issues that may arise during service delivery or product sales. This role is essential for maintaining strong business relationships and ensuring that client expectations are met efficiently and effectively.

This role revolves around fostering strong relationships between a business and its clients. Account managers serve as the primary point of contact, ensuring clients' needs are met while aligning with the company's objectives. They coordinate with internal teams to deliver solutions tailored to clients' requirements.

Many promises are made in the Sales process. An Account Manager's project management skills are essential to meeting (or exceeding) a new customer's expectations. Keeping colleagues and clients on track to meet deadlines is critical at any time but especially during the first 90 days. This is when we're setting the tone and cadence of the ongoing relationship.

Communication skills go beyond just conveying information; they involve active listening to truly understand the client's perspective and concerns. Negotiation skills are crucial for navigating complex contracts, resolving conflicts, and reaching mutually beneficial agreements. Problem-solving abilities are essential for addressing challenges that arise during the client relationship, whether it's a technical issue, a budget constraint, or a change in business priorities. Furthermore, project management skills help in orchestrating cross-functional teams to deliver on client commitments seamlessly.

Empathy enables account managers to put themselves in the client's shoes, fostering trust and deeper connections. Curiosity drives a continuous quest for understanding the client's evolving needs and exploring innovative solutions to meet them. Resilience is indispensable for weathering the inevitable setbacks and rejections that come with the territory. Meanwhile, passion fuels the energy and commitment needed to go above and beyond for clients, even when challenges arise.

Building long-term relationships with clients can lead to a sense of fulfillment and loyalty. Sometimes Account Managers are given an impossible task. For example, they may have an unmanageable workload if a company has been understaffed or under-resourced. Another difficulty is if their partners in Sales make ambitious commitments to new customers that are impossible to execute without taking time and attention away from existing customers.

Whilst so much of the company that you work for are usually inwards facing, looking at success through the funnel of your business, account managers are always looking outside the business. Balancing the needs of your company with those of your partners is a tightrope walk and maintaining balance can feel impossible at times. The hardest part is recognising when it is OK to let go. Not every partnership is built for the long haul, and trying to fit a square peg in a round hole has never worked for anyone. No one wins then and you end up exhausted and burnt out. Always take time to breathe.

Managing multiple client accounts simultaneously requires exceptional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize effectively. The pressure to meet or exceed client expectations while balancing internal constraints can be stressful. Moreover, navigating through internal bureaucracy or conflicts can be challenging when trying to advocate for the client's needs. Additionally, maintaining work-life balance can be difficult, especially when dealing with urgent client demands or tight deadlines.

Reflect on your interpersonal skills—are you naturally inclined to build rapport and connect with people? Consider your problem-solving abilities and how you handle ambiguity and pressure. Assess your career goals and whether the autonomy and client-facing nature of account management align with them. Moreover, think about your communication style and whether you're comfortable navigating complex negotiations and difficult conversations.
