You’re in charge of a healthcare facility. How can you improve patient care through empathy?

To further enhance your empathy, consider engaging in activities that promote understanding and connection with others. This can include practicing active listening, putting yourself in someone else's shoes to see things from their perspective, and showing genuine care and concern for others' well-being. Additionally, seeking out opportunities to volunteer, participate in diversity and inclusion training, and engage in cultural experiences can help broaden your understanding and empathy towards different individuals and communities. Remember, empathy is a skill that can be cultivated and strengthened over time through practice and self-reflection.

Assume it's you: Each time I see a diabetic patient, I'm more moved than every other person in the room. Why? It feels fresh like my uncle's case. Experience brews empathy more than anything I've come across. This is why a rape victim reacts a little bit more emotionally to a rape case than a non-rape victim. Healthcare professionals ought to learn how to feel their patient's pain. This is just one way to relate with more empathy. An intentional act to feel every patients pain. See their families and assume they're yours. How would they feel? How would the kids of this mother go on without their mum? Yeah...It's hard but doable.

Contrary to what many people think, empathy isn't just something you're born with—it's a skill you can develop. Just like any other leadership skill, empathy needs to be intentionally practiced. In healthcare it’s absolutely crucial we accept the fact everyone is a fighting a battle we know nothing about. Especially colleagues on the care team. It’s how we support each other to ensure our trauma doesn’t impact our ability to ease the trauma of others. We can develop empathy by being more intent on actively listening to others and intentionally seek to understand before making assumptions.

1. Cultivate Curiosity: Develop a genuine interest in others' perspectives and experiences. Ask open-ended questions to learn more about their thoughts and feelings. 2. Empathy Exercises: Engage in empathy-building activities or exercises that help you step into someone else's shoes and see the world from their point of view. 3. Seek Feedback: Encourage honest feedback from those around you to understand how your actions and words impact them, and be open to making necessary adjustments. 4. Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on your own biases, assumptions, and privileges, and explore how these factors may influence your ability to empathize with others.

Develop your empathy skills with those you serve first. Listen expertly to your individual contributors. Their needs are the same as your patients: to be heard, respected, and communicated well with consistently. Concern yourself with their wellbeing, ask questions that start with "what" or "how" and follow up with "tell me more." Words matter. Ensure your words align with your intention and tie your encouragement & recognition to what matters most to the individual, and connect your words to the mission and values of the organization. How well your patients are cared for is directly tied to how well you care for your team!

Fostering a culture that integrates empathy into everything that you do is essential. Take the time to truly understand the patient experience. Hold training sessions that focus on emotional awareness and self-management strategies to help ensure empathy is rooted in the decisions you make, the interactions you have and how you care for patients.

This approach not only boosts staff morale but also enhances patient satisfaction and trust, ultimately leading to better healthcare outcomes.

By acknowledging that every patient is different and unique, however human. Therefore processes and procedures must be designed around the patient and their effectiveness measured around human outcomes, for example patient well-being. For example: if we do not solve a patient's problem, the repeating of the phrase "is there anything else I can do for you?" is not the correct answer. A better patient centered design answer would be "I am sorry we were not able to help you today. We will keep trying".

Go through your own processes as a patient. This was something my teams did as part of ‘competency day’. When you live the patient’s experience, you immediately see ways to solve the problems because they are your problems as well. Then put systemic solutions in place. In addition to addressing the problem, the team can speak empathetically because they have lived similar experiences.
