My main objective is to create a cohesive environment where HR and Operations work towards common goals. By maintaining a balance, I foster an environment that drives organizational success. Understanding both sides is crucial, requiring regular communication to stay informed about needs and priorities. Prioritizing employee well-being fosters a supportive environment. Facilitating regular meetings ensures everyone is on the same page. Aligning HR initiatives with operational goals and making data-driven decisions ensures fairness and effectiveness. By following these principles, I create a culture of collaboration, respect, and continuous improvement.

Transparency. Open communication. Be an effective listener. For any conflict, these 3 factors should be the utmost consideration. It is challenging to achieve balance in any conflicting situation. But once you practice (1) Transparency - it's simply a way of being open and honest about everything. (2) Open communication - showing your willingness to share your thoughts and opinion. If the organization values its employees' opinions and make them feel they all matter, it will be easier to all employees of all levels to voice out their thoughts. (3) Be a good listener - You may be a good communicator but not a good listener at all times. Should be balanced. Makes sense? Communicate, Listen and be transparent. After observing this dynamic I realized unexpected scenarios such as part shortages or machine failures create downtime. Having a plan with ops to slide in training during the downtime allowed HR to facilitate the training while not creating any additional downtime. I always say we are each our own subject matter expert. While HR professionals wear many different hats, the team members in operations were hired to do what they do and even if we have different priorities it’s good to set boundaries early. HR typically comes from a place of compliance so it’s setting the tone on what’s non negotiable and then allowing the operations team to make it happen. For all other non compliance related matters continuous dialogue while help everyone figure out what works best for everyone. Gathering data correctly also allows facts to speak to a solution.

What I have found helpful is making a mix between understanding the goal and prioritizing the issues that can be an obstacle to achieve it. Also, us as HR understanding the operation will open our mind to find better and flexible solutions that can give the right balance between operations and people.

The approach that returns the best outcome in my role, starts with defining the major tasks in a to-do list. Once that is done, there is a huge sense of control and power getting back to you that propels a mindset of efficiency and ultimately makes the situation not that impossible after all. The next step involves defining the urgency of all, or most items listed with those who are directly involved or negatively impacted, and that gives me a more realistic judgement of the real priorities set on my list, most of the time I have found processes willing to be flexible.

HR vs other internal stakeholders is a perennial dilemma for leaders across functions. However the HR functionaries need to digest the fact that they are a service function. At the same time the Operations personnel too need to appreciate the fact that HR now has the potential to be a sound and reliable business partner. Thus roles of both functions are complementary and NOT superior or inferior to either. Once, leaders realise this simple fact, its a matter of time that the team from either functions also accepts and supports each other. After all, the stakeholders are wedded to one common goal to ensure the progress of the organisation!
