Learn to say NO. It's important to know your limits and learn to say no when necessary. Overcommitting yourself can lead to feelings of overwhelm and negatively impact both work and personal life.

The most crucial thing is to learn to say NO. Sometimes people are under stress and suffer burnouts because they do not know how to say NO. They overwork, they want to reply every call, every message and every mail. They sometimes feel they are responsible for everything in the organization. We need to understand that everyone within the organization has a task and everyone needs to perform this task efficiently. Hence set clear boundaries, learn to say no.

Setting clear boundaries is crucial for maintaining work-life balance as an Oil and Gas professional. Clearly defining when work ends and personal time begins helps prevent work from encroaching on your personal life. This could mean establishing specific working hours, avoiding checking work emails during personal time, or communicating with colleagues about your availability outside of work hours. By setting these boundaries, you can ensure that you have dedicated time for yourself, your family, and your hobbies, promoting overall well-being and reducing stress.

Over the year, I have intentionally set boundaries between my work and personal life in order to have a balanced life. I try as much as possible not to take work home and vice versa. If I am at home and I get a task isn’t critical and can wait, I attend to it the following day. However, if it needs urgent attention, I explain to my family and go on to attend to it. Creating balance between work and my personal has helped me manage stress and pressure.

Make sure to keep work stuff separate from your personal time. Try not to bring work home or keep checking emails when you're supposed to be relaxing or spending time with friends. This boundary-setting also sends a clear message to your colleagues and supervisors about your commitment to maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Knowing the tasks and projects to take on and those to delegate has made me more effective as a leader. At the initial stage of my entrepreneurial journey, i took on most of the tasks because i felt my staff didn’t know as much as I did. As the years went by, I realized that pattern only reduced my productivity. So, i began to train my staff and delegate different tasks to them and with time they horned the skill. Now, i list each project to know those to prioritize and those to delegate.

It depends on which phase of your career you're in and what kind of job you're doing in the oil and gas. For instance, if you're doing field based rotational job and proper rotation is followed then you can have quality time with your family on your days off. I was doing rotational job in middle east for 4 years in Saudi and UAE & I loved it (35 days on 35 days off and in another company it was 2 month off and 1 month off). Especially when it's equal rotation 35/35 its really amazing. On the other hand, if you're based out of office (usually 9 to 5) or living in town which is close to fields then you can come back home everyday.

Maximizing planners has helped me greatly to plan each day and schedule activities. This way, i am mostly in control of my day and rarely get trapped in unproductive activities.

As a professional who works from upstream to down stream of the oil and gas industry, from educational work to industrial, being flexible is the most important factor to handle the situation for facing different types of works. Im sure that there's nothing that I can't achieve in my profession so it depends on your self to achieve it or not. Our situation changes much faster than what think and we shouldn't stick to whatever we have learned in advance.

In as much as i plan my day, i try to remain flexible. This way, I can easily accommodate unplanned activities or emergencies.

I consciously make out time to relax and enjoy the moment. Sometimes, i take a break from work and go on vacations and appreciate the beauty of nature or listen to my favorite music or simply have a great time with my family.

Staying at home doesn't automatically translate to quality time with our families. Personally, I believe when you're at home, it's essential to distance yourself from cellphone & limit screen time in order to foster a strong connection with family. Though eliminating device use is challenging, consciously reducing cellphone usage is crucial. This is especially important for parents, as they serve as role models for their growing children. When they observe their parents glued to screens, they're likely to follow the same behavior, leading to concerns about excessive use of cellphones & tablets. Practically, one can start by setting boundaries, such as prohibiting phone use in the home after 9 PM & gradually work towards improving habits.
