You’re a business development professional. What are the biggest challenges you face?

Getting in front of the right people. It's not easy trying to get diary time of very busy people, even if you think you have a USP.

As a business development professional, the biggest challenges often revolve around navigating complex market dynamics, fierce competition, and changing consumer preferences. Additionally, maintaining consistent communication and alignment between different departments within the organization can pose significant hurdles. Balancing short-term goals with long-term strategic planning while adapting to evolving industry trends also presents ongoing challenges in driving sustainable growth and success.

The biggest challenges in BD, and by extension sales, is the ability to determine what is and is not a lead and ending unlikely pursuits FAST. The l o n g maybe is the kiss of death for small and medium sized businesses. There are a lot of prospects that apparently don’t have anything better to do than waste your time. Getting to a quick NO is the best skill to have and the hardest skill to find. Too many BD professionals have ‘great meetings.’ A great meeting is determining whether or not you are going onto the next step. The goal BD is not to fill up your calendar with endless meetings. The goal is to qualify leads and convert them into sales or convert them into NOs as quickly as possible.

In my strategic role, the synergy of communication and empathy is paramount. Exceptional communication, coupled with genuine empathy, enables a profound understanding of client needs and desired solutions. This dynamic duo forms the linchpin for building trust, aligning offerings with client expectations, and ultimately driving successful outcomes for all parties. Everyone thrives in this business relationship mode.

Execution speaks louder than words. No material trust is built only with words. Define and agree on next step you can execute in a week, max a month. Don’t over promise. Make it small; gather data and report, design and send invite for a session, collect and summarize references, etc. Deliver it. Collect feedback. Define next small action; improvement, change, proceed to next step, alter the course. Deliver it, and repeat. Making and keeping small promises at high quality, high speed, and reliably is often the best way to build trust.

Think less about what you have to offer and more about what the customer needs. Square pegs don't fit round holes, no matter how good the sales patter; if you have square pegs, move on, for everyone's sake. If you have round pegs, listen carefully, because the ones in the customer's eye will appeal more than the ones in yours.

You have to develop rapport and trust with your customers. The goal should be to become a trusted partner, not just for your capabilities but to their needs. That earns you the right to progress to offering what your company has to offer. A simple book that helped me early on and one I have passed on to others is "Skill with People" by Les Giblin.

In business development, it's important to be open and sincere when discussing expectations and deliverables. Everyone's input matters. Stay flexible and creative, and don't let limitations hold you back. Encourage open communication and teamwork. This approach ensures success and strengthens team bonds. Collaborations where both sides achieve fair gains are valuable.

Document document and document! The best thing you can do for yourself and your client is to document everything ranging from initial project plans to daily progress reports. More often than not, delays in projects happen but if you've documented your processes you should be able to satisfactorily explain to your client why a delay occurred and what's your plan for moving forward.

Over promising, over committing, and under delivering is a sure way to fail at developing new business and obtaining existing clients. Work with your customers timelines, but if you cannot meet them, do not promise that you can. Work with the internal stakeholders about what is possible, negotiate with your external and internal customers to try and see if you can make it work. If you cannot, do not lie, take a loss, regroup, and come back with another solution at another time.

Balancing quality and quantity is crucial to business development. While quantity ensures a steady flow of leads, focusing solely on it may result in low conversion rates and wasted resources. Prioritise quality by identifying prospects that align with your ideal customer profile and have a genuine need for your products or services. Invest time in nurturing relationships with these high-potential leads to increase the likelihood of conversion and long-term success. However, don't neglect quantity entirely; maintaining a sufficient pipeline of prospects is essential for business growth. Strive for balance by implementing efficient lead generation strategies while ensuring each lead receives personalised attention and value.

For businesses creating value everyday is important. It supports the vision of growth and industry dominance. Not having the right balance in quantity and quality, you are prone to lose money and gradually lose on every aspect of your business plan.....For example, having too many people in an organization can impose duplication of responsibilities, resulting in the lack of value creation for the business. Have the right quantity of people in the right designations, enhances your reach to satisfy organizational goals. Balance is vital, and must be guided with indept understanding of your business and industry.

After sitting on an empty inbox for days you suddenly become innundated with requests, follow-ups and querries. This is the rule rather than the exception. In such high workload moments, you need to prioritise and yes, learn to say no. Often denying a request that does not align with your goals can give you the neccessary time to handle a higher priority target with full focus.

There's always pressure to generate a high volume of leads. But sacrificing quality for quantity can backfire. I've learned to focus on targeted outreach to qualified prospects, which ultimately leads to better conversion rates.

Prioritisation can be done in several ways but the most easiest and effective ways to do this is to quantify your priorities in terms of value vs effort - what gives me the maximum value with least amount of effort - will drive your prioritisation strategy

Building and refining a diverse skill set, from strategic thinking to relationship management, demands consistent effort and commitment. Additionally, finding quality training resources and mentorship can be challenging. Overcoming self-doubt and staying motivated amidst setbacks also play a significant role. Prioritizing personal development while achieving business objectives necessitates effective time management and a proactive approach to lifelong learning.

Another challenge business development professional face is to develop oneself & their skills. This means you need to keep up with changing trends & demands of the market, learn new skills & acquire knowledge to enhance your value & performance. Further you need to have curiosity for learning, a growth mindset & be open to feedback & also mentoring from others. Aside from this,you need to have self care & wellness routine. Also need to manage your stress & burnout. And to add to it,passion & enthusiasm for your work. Last but not least, you need to find meaning & purpose in what you do.

The biggest challenges you face in business development include rapidly changing market dynamics, technological advancements, and maintaining customer relationships in world that has become “digital-first.” Adapting to new sales technologies and platforms requires constant learning and flexibility. Staying ahead requires a proactive approach to trends, a commitment to ongoing education, and a focus on authentic customer experiences to foster loyalty and trust.

Business development isn't for the faint of heart! There's always a chance a deal might fall through. But I find that persistence and a positive attitude are key. Rejection is just part of the process, and it can lead to valuable learning experiences.

Regardless of the circumstances, staying confident and adaptable is essential for success in business development.

Its important to remember that you're reaching out to people who are not anticipating your communication - especially if its a cold call, you are interrupting someone else's day. So set realistic expectations for yourself and expect some people you reach out to, to feel annoyed and not being receptive to a conversation with you. On the other hand, you might be able to help someone solve a business challenge they've been facing, and your call saves them the energy of having to find a solution provider themselves. Its a numbers game to a certain degree so keep carrying out your business development tasks and activities and don't shy away from the rejection - every "no" will get you closer to a "yes"!

One of the biggest challenge a business development professional can face is the uncertainty & risk that come with pursuing new opportunities and creating value. This means that you need to be able to cope with the ambiguity & volatility of the market & also embracing the challenges & opportunities that arise. Further you need to have a resilient & adaptable mindset which can handle change & complexity. Also you need to have a courageous and confident attitude which means will be able to take calculative risks & learn from failures.

Uncertainty and risks are embeeded in the develpment process, especially when it comes to operating in markets in developing countries. The four key assets/competencies I believe the most critical to develop and nurture in order to develop the business in the VUCA environment are : sensing and seizing opportunities, resilience, permanent Test and learn, timely pivoting and resource reconfiguration when needed to capture the sensed opportunities.

Business development requires strong strategic planning. Identifying potential convertible biz opportunities compatible with our company's product expertise and delivery capability is the key. Next is to figure out the right decision maker at the client's end and build a "Trusted Advisor" relationship with him/her. Clear understanding of client's expectation is a must to ensure appropriate delivery of satisfactory solutions. A win-win pricing/fee negotiation will result in a happy client and service provider. Last but not least maintaining individual reputation and the firm's reputation is paramount !

In my sector, infrastructure, it’s finding and hiring the talent that will win and deliver. Firms that make an attractive place to work have a leg up in the recruitment race, but you have to provide the project opportunities to allow people to grow their career. To do that you have to have a growth mindset around BD that is deeply embedded in the culture. When you leverage those you can attract the top talent.

New market penetration is one of the most challenging /exciting aspects of a BD person, strive to be successful with every challenge. How do we prepare the "Inner Self" first. Remember Life is not always fair, losing a deal is part of the task, pick the next challenge/energize yourself from the learning. BD reminds me a lot to an old board game "snake and ladders" Keep on rolling the dice. How-stay true within your own/company values. "Walk the extra mile" within set "boundaries", stay true to the client if obstacles are experience, solve them, move on positively. Staying ahead of competitors in a dynamic market is tough. This involves continuous innovation, understanding competitor strategies, and differentiating the offerings effectively.

Understanding customers do not always understand the solution to the problem they are trying to solve. Active listening, challenging of known knowns, widening the set of inputs/stakeholders and knowing who they are trying to solve the problem for will take longer, but often lead to a far more successful outcome. Understand priority, budget, timescales and cost/opportunity to the customer is critical also.
