You're bombarded with questions after a presentation. How do you effectively manage your time?

You don't have to answer all questions. You can always decline politely by mentioning that a question might be out of scope for this presentation. You can also ask the questioner to email you the question. But do reply within 24 hours to the questioner. This will establish your integrity.

If you can juggle it. Answer a bundle of questions with one answer - especially if they are all related to the same theme. As long as you acknowledge each question in the process. Check the time remaining with the host and answer as many as you can - always saying you would like to catch-up with people afterwards - time allowing. The worst offences are taking an age with one answer, than being cursory with the rest. I always acknowledge questions as 'Good' or 'Delightfully Challenging' and answer with brevity. Get them to sign-up with you Linkedin account and offer a post on the subject. That works for me.

If you give a presentation with a Q&A session at the end, set parameters upfront. You can set a limit on time or the number of questions. Q&A sessions that are too long will detract from the presentation, so they should be a fraction of the time you presented. For example, if you speak for 20 minutes, allow for five minutes of questions and answers. Also, you can do a Q&A session before your presentation's conclusion, then you can control the ending and wrap it up strongly – instead of fizzling out with the questions and answers. For example, “I’ll take five minutes for a few questions, then I’ll wrap up my presentation.”

Don't introduce new concepts in your replies as they can lead to more questions. Be concise and to the point with your answers.

When responding to questions, be clear, concise, and direct. Avoid jargon or overly technical language that your audience may not understand. If you need to delve deeper into a specific topic, offer to follow up with them in a separate email or meeting. Anticipate potential questions beforehand and prepare concise answers to them. This will not only save time during the Q&A but also project confidence in your expertise.

Q & A is a great opportunity to continue the conversation and should be answered in the same way as your presentation. You would still follow the important rules of presenting like, eye contact, projection, purposeful gestures and so on to engage the entire group, not just the one asking questions. Just because your formal presentation time has ended doesn't mean that the presentation skills have also stopped. You don't want to lose the attention of the audience as you close with questions rather crescendo and end with a bang!

Challenging situations and questions may come up, and knowing this will help you prepare for them. It's better to be ready, knowing that questions or situations will arise that may throw you a curve ball. If so, what will you do? How will you handle a challenging question? Being willing to say that you don't know the answer or may need to investigate the question will be more appreciated than making something up and running the risk of misspeaking. Instead, you can get back to the person asking, or group, with the correct answer rather than make something up on the spot.

- To handle certain situations, CALMNESS is the KEY! Daily rituals like meditation is necessary to handle such situations. - Being TRUTHFUL and acknowledging that you are unaware about some questions is fine. It shows your CREDIBILITY.

Questions may arise after the session ends, and this is a great opportunity for attendees to contact you. Providing your contact information allows them to reach out as your presentation sinks in. This not only helps deepen their understanding of your content but also gives you a chance to build rapport with the audience post-event. When possible, sharing your information during the event can be more impactful than sending it afterward, where it might get lost among other communications.

Put your contact information up before the Q&A starts; it removes the barrier of people having to approach individually. I always let everyone know where I'll be immediately after the presentation or later in the conference to emphasize that there's another chance to chat in case they have to rush off. That can both cut down on the number of immediate questions and also ease any anxieties the audience might have about 'missing their chance' to connect.

When you get really good at the topic that you’re speaking about you start to understand the questions that your audience has already so I would bake them into your talk and pre-answer them if you can or overcome any objections to the content that you’re creating alternatively having time for Q&A at the end is always really impactful and for myself I usually hang back and talk to the audience. It’s my favorite part of public speaking to be honest.I think it’s great to be able to understand your audience and chat to people at the end because it makes you better at what you do.

I would be replying on this in pointers as there are few points to mention: 1. Allocate specific time slots for questions and stick to them. For instance, you might allow 10/15 minutes at the end or take a few questions after each section. I've tried both. Q&A session at the end of the session worked best for me. This ensures you cover all queries without letting the Q&A dominate. 2. Politely guide questioners to be succinct. If someone's question is lengthy or unclear, paraphrase it back to confirm understanding and respond efficiently. This also saves up on time. 3. Signal the end of the Q&A session clearly. Thank the audience for their participation and invite further discussion or networking opportunities after the presentation.
