You're being interviewed about the future of eSports. What's your take?

In comparison to the sporting world, esports is still in its infancy stages. To get an understanding, watching a documentary such as "High Score" will help. Without getting into too much detail it features early creators of arcades, consoles, video games and esports. The rise of technology has significantly enabled the rise of esports from local arcades, internet cafes, basement gaming/LANS through streaming to the masses. Increasing internet speeds and platforms such as Twitch or Youtube and therefore fueled its growth where people could compete individually or as a team be seen internationally or locally. There are many factors that led to the rise of esports but these are just a few. What are we missing?

Although the history goes back to the 80s, the real boom started in the last ten to fifteen years. This was made even faster by the pandemic, which eventually led to a bit of an overgrowth. This is fine, because we are all still discovering how esports work, what business model makes sense, and what doesn't. A few examples - franchise leagues, hands-on or hands-off approaches from game publishers, content distribution - paid channels, free channels, TV deals. All these things are still being finalized.

The rise of eSports is a testament to the transformative power of technology and community. From the pixelated arcades to the global stages we see today, eSports has evolved into a cultural phenomenon. At UEL, we've embraced this evolution, recognizing that the essence of gaming transcends the screen—it's about connection, competition, and the endless pursuit of excellence. Our league is a microcosm of this incredible journey, where gamers from all walks of life come together to celebrate their passion and prowess.

As I mentioned above, the main challenge is to figure out the best commercial models. There are generally no TV deals in esports, but there are in-game cosmetic items that can provide a source of revenue for the teams. So the challenge is HOW to monetize viewership and fandom. We lack some possibilities from traditional sports, and we have some extra that they don't have.

Esports teams face a number of challenges from a sustainable business model standpoint. The biggest one, I think, is a lack of accountability on resource management and CFO knowledge on how to structure and resource an esports team business. Working in a unpredictable financial model due to a more competitive industry, it's harder than ever to model out the financial landscape. Leading to constant 'fires' needing to be put out. The insistent swimming against the tide means staff burn out quick and the esports team lacks direction leading to disillusionment from employees. Can be resolved imo from better accountability on P&L sheets and CFO knowledge on structuring.

The opportunities to grow in esports is big it’s a every growing industry that can be expanded globally and it needs diversity only 4% of the video games industry is African American. People of color need to step up and start going after their visions hosting events & developing those Video Games! To build and ecosystem and contribute to the economy.

Esports has gone through a few boom and bust years with ever evolving bubbles. But the latest 'esports winter' I think has set things up better for the future. I think teams and investors will learn from mistakes. Grassroots infrastructure has been growing rapidly from universities and tier 2 and tier 3 esports teams. People are understanding it's not just a money grab but a real value opportunity to capitalize on an amazing audience. The future seems more mature, more settled and more diverse in revenue. I'm optimistic people will be excited by esports again soon.

The future is bright but it is the future for a reason. Whether it will be 5, 10 years or even sooner, there is continued growth at all levels from middle school, high school and college as well as recreational and youth leagues that are just starting. As the current younger generations continue to mature and develop their own purchasing power, the gaming and esports industry they grew up with should follow.

I think people sleep on starting your own company and branding their horizons I have a Global Vision of being all across the Universe organically helping countries and continents developing Esports infrastructure and creating jobs and careers good paying careers getting the government to support the video game industry and companies like they do all the other big industries. It’s good to speak on the News and get Any Esports initiative out there because Esports is bigger than Traditional Sports & the events sell out before NBA games & NFL games.

I have to be honest that I don't want to give away my exact thoughts and plans for esports, selfishly! but esports will not only be everywhere it will have huge crossover appeal and be involved in areas you wouldn't have expected! The future is highly exciting in this space!!

The esports industry is exploring new revenue models beyond advertising, sponsorships, and broadcasting rights. This includes in-game purchases, merchandise, and experiential events. Diversifying revenue streams will be key to the financial stability and growth of esports organizations.
