You’re in a behavioral interview. How do you make sure you’re answering questions the right way?

Behavioral interviews are my chance to shine. I actively listen, clarifying when needed. Using the STAR method, I craft compelling stories highlighting relevant skills and experiences that align with the desired competencies. Specific examples showcase my achievements and demonstrate how I deliver results.

The first thing you should do when asked a question is to listen very carefully and be sure you understand what is being asked. Sometimes this will require a question by you to clarify exactly what the interviewer wants to find out with his inquiry. Once you are sure what the topic is, you can formulate a meaningful answer using the STAR method. This reverse questioning, or repeating of the question, is called reflective communication and will demonstrate your ability to listen and reach mutual understanding. This will also buy you time to formulate a meaningful response.

I love STAR and with my clients I've renamed it the SuperSTAR model Your objective as the candidate is to convince the hiring manager that you are best candidate to come in and help solve their problems Think of a job description as a list problems and you want to show the hiring manager how you can come in to save the day One way to do that is to show them how you have solved similar problems- S - What's the problem ? T - Objective? A - How you fixed it ? R - So What ? Show impact to the bottom line. How did you help increase sales, improve processes or meet regulatory compliance? Show the hiring manager how you can make their life easier, and you more likely to make a great first impression think SuperSTAR??

It's definitey important to prepare using the STAR model. Beyond knowing how to use it, thinking of good examples from your experience is key. Employers will of course want to evaluate your collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving skills, but it's also important to demonstrate leadership and creativity. These skills can be woven into answers on other commonly asked for skills. It's also imoortant to use specific examples about real experiences, and to talk in the first person. Interviews are about the skills YOU can bring.

Never lie. If you’re honest, you will never have to try to remember what you lied about. The truth will Always be the same answer no matter how the same question is asked.

We all need to be aware of the little things that others see in our facial expressions, postures, energy levels, and gestures. Generally, you should be dynamic and friendly, but one notch less than the person interviewing you. It is obvious that interviewers prefer those who smile vs. those who frown, so smile! However, your facial expression should change to reflect the mood of the conversation. Nodding agreement encourages others to talk and lets them know that you understand what is being said. Eye contact is one of the best aspects of body language. Good eye contact with the interviewer sends a message of trustworthiness, confidence, and credibility while encouraging open discussion.

Preparing and practicing for interviews will not only help you feel more confident during the interview and less anxious, but will also show the interviewers how engaged and serious you are about the role and the company. Looking at the responsibilities of the role and the comoanies values can indicate you on the skills that may be evaluted during the interview.

The STAR method is a timeless method available to help formulate your responses. When you are asked a behavioral formatted question, your response should outline the "Situation", "Task", "Action" and "Result. Following this format not only helps keep your response clear and concise in relation to the question asked but also will support your thinking while under pressure.

The more you prepare, the less stressful the experience--and the more productive for all concerned. The hiring process varies from company to company. Interviews can take the form of phone screens, virtual meetings, one-on-one interviews, or panel-on-one interviews. Regardless of the forum, preparation is the key to success to make the interview process as easy and productive as possible. Preparation and practice will reduce the amount of anxiety and nervousness you may feel.

In addition to delivering well-crafted responses to behavioral questions, it's crucial to exude enthusiasm and positivity during the interview. Employers not only seek information about your actions but also your attitude, emotions, and insights derived from previous experiences. Displaying genuine enthusiasm for your work and a positive perspective on overcoming challenges can leave a strong impression on the interviewer. By showcasing your passion and optimism, you not only address questions effectively but also underscore your potential as a motivated and optimistic candidate.

My 4 cents to the on acing the interview: 1. Reflect on Learnings: Beyond just describing actions and results, articulate what you learned from each experience and how it's shaped your professional approach. 2. Adaptability: Be ready to adapt your prepared stories to different questions. Think about how your experiences can illustrate various competencies. 3. Non-Verbal Cues: Pay attention to your body language. Maintain eye contact, nod to show engagement, and mind your posture to convey confidence. 4. Questions for Them: Have insightful questions ready for the interviewer. This shows your interest in the role and helps you gauge if the company aligns with your career goals.

The Behavioral questions - "tell me about a time when 'X' happened and how you dealt with it", "how do you cope with 'Y'" - have a specific function; the interviewer wants to understand how the candidate behaves in a precise situation. They are mainly looking for: - logical thinking - problem solving skills - reaction to sudden change Structuring your answer with the STAR method will give you the story telling you need to make the context clear. When answering be mindful to: - be factual; it will give you the neutrality needed - leave out personal comments; they might create bias - take your time; especially when the answer doesn't come easily to mind - never say "I don't know"; use a similar situation

Usually for behavioral interview or they call also as situational interview is you need to analyze first the question.. think before you answer. Be open and honest in your answer. The interviewer wants to know how you behaved or react in a real world situation. In these types of questions, they are not necessarily wrong answers. These questions are given for them to get to know the real YOU.
