To make a confident impression during a higher education job interview, it is essential to combine presentation, mindset, and preparation. I vividly remember my interview for the position of assistant dean of international relations for the School of Business at my university. I prepared thoroughly, despite being familiar with my interviewers, understanding the importance of leaving a lasting impression and projecting confidence. I ensured my presentation slides were error-free and spoke articulately during the interview. Before the interview, I conducted a background check on the role and sought advice from others to enhance my preparation. Finally, I visualized myself succeeding in the interview, and that approach proved to be effective.

Know Your Strengths: Identify the key skills, experiences, and accomplishments that set you apart as a strong candidate. Be ready to clearly articulate these, using specific examples that demonstrate your impact in past roles.

I will explain this as I am having two good stories to share. Once I appeared for an interview. The deputy director took the interview. My presentation was not good, interview was not good and I was told by the deputy director that they are not taking me. I told ok and returned. After 10 years I met the same deputy director in an interview of VC of a private university. I met him in a taxi while going to airport, I could recognize him but did not ask him about the results. I told him that we have met 10 years before and that time my h-index was 10 but in 2018 it was 30. I was happy that my publications and h-index were going in right direction. I was that time very good candidate, good interview, not selected, no regrets for this.

Whenever I go to a job interview for a Higher Ed position, I always make sure my body language strikes the right balance between approachable and composed. First, I focus on staying relaxed but confident. Sitting up straight with open posture shows I’m engaged, while keeping my hands in a natural position, like resting them on the table, avoids looking too stiff. I also smile genuinely to come off as friendly and approachable, obviously without overdoing it. Of course, eye contact is key too becauase it shows I’m listening but not trying too hard. Every time I combine these small actions, I can stay calm, look professional, and also connect with the interviewer.
