I’ve often struggled with niching down in my own writing journey but have come to understand its importance. By focusing my efforts I’m able to offer unparalleled value. Which can help me build a loyal reading / customer base. For example, if you are having issues with your ear, nose and throat you’d much rather feel comfortable going to a doctor who specializes in that practice than a general practitioner. Meaning people feel comfortable listening to you if they know you’re dedicated to the topic and/or subject matter. By niching down and specializing you transform your work from generic to extraordinary, which can give you longevity and make a lasting impact in the writing industry.

Picking up a niche can be daunting at first. But as you grow, you need to choose one niche that you want to work in. You need to master one. Selecting a niche will elevate your personal brand to an upper level. You will shine as a master of one niche. It is like going to a specialist for a cure compared to a physician who can take care of everything. Everyone wants to hire an expert. And writing is no different. You start with broad and then niche down to one speciality.

If you're thinking of expanding your writing business... be prepared to stop writing. At this point you will spend more time acquiring clients than writing. You'll know you're there when you're farming out jobs to other writers because you don't have the time. You've established a pool of writers already. Time to put on that editor and business owner hat. Now your job will be getting client projects for your writers and making sure each job is completed on time to your standards. Income will come from your percentage of each job (set by the contract you have with the writers). Just part of the industry progression. In time you'll get tired of it and hire someone to take your place. Then you'll go write the next bestselling novel.
