A lot of people mistakenly oversimplify the role of Producer down to Project Manager. Yes, project management is a huge portion of the Producer's role. The Producer will still typically be in charge of a game's development schedule, individual tasking, sometimes a budget, and a lot of important documentation around all of this. In addition to all of this, however, a Producer is expected to have a critical eye towards games and creative work, and be able to critique and have a good sense of "what done looks like". Also important is an interest in learning technical limitations and understanding asset pipelines. This lets them look for potential optimizations and efficiencies in the team's workflow, and ways to shortcut and simplify the work.

When facing pushback on innovative design changes, get your team on board by clearly communicating the rationale and benefits behind the changes. Share data, player feedback, or market trends that support the need for innovation, and explain how the changes align with the overall project goals and vision.

Having a strong creative vision is about seeing the big picture and understanding how each element of the game—story, mechanics, art, and sound—fits together to create an immersive experience. As a producer, it's your job to maintain this vision throughout development, ensuring it aligns with market trends and player expectations. You must be adept at guiding your team to innovate while staying grounded in what's technically and financially feasible. A game producer should have some knowledge with regards to the technological aspect of game production. Knowledge of game engines, SDKs, and programming languages matters to improve communication with your team and fixes the problem. It provides more better decisions and solutions when one is aware of the existent platforms such as PC, consoles and the touch.

Understanding the capabilities and constraints of various game engines and platforms allows you to make strategic decisions that keep the project on track. In my experience, Production processes have remained relatively unchanged for over 15 years, despite advancements in other areas of game development. This presents an opportunity for evolution. Effective production should aim to innovate and explore new, adaptable tools that incorporate AI technologies. By embracing these advancements, we can enhance our workflow, increase efficiency, and better align with the dynamic nature of modern game development. This forward-thinking approach has the potential to significantly improve our production processes and contribute to the overall success of our projects.

The power and ability to influence will be a key component. Figuring out exactly where the team is trying to go and make sure everyone is moving towards the common place. Talking about product/service vision, aligning with the culture. Communicating with the stakeholders even users/players to gain perspective on the thing to build. Being able to motivate the team through decision making, bringing them together and ensuring everyone moves towards the same direction.

Think of Business Acumen as the metagame of the industry. Traditionally, producers would learn about the business side of the industry while on the job. Now colleges (such as Champlain College, where I work) are offering undergraduate business degrees that focus specifically on Production. These programs have coursework that not only covers people and project management techniques and practices, but also delve into the strategic decisions that make games possible. If you're already in the industry and looking at transitioning into production, beef up your business acumen by learning about basic finance reports & conduct market research by reading the 10ks of publicly traded companies.

Never stop learning about your own craft but don’t forget to learn about the subject matter experts you are surrounded by. As a person who is expected to always know what is going on around you and with your project it is imperative that you are continuously learning about everyone else's job and I don't just mean the User Stories in your Jira instance. Sit down with people and ask them about what they are doing, what skills they have or want to learn, and what hurdles they face in their job. You will find that while you are learning about their job you will also build relationships with the people on your team, which is invaluable as well.

Stay curious! Peer mentoring is a brilliant way to engage with others while expanding your knowledge. If you're in concept art, talk to an engine programmer; if you're a level designer, talk to someone who does facial animations. As a new producer, talking to people outside of your team or project will be a boon: You can get outside perspectives on problems or tasks that you're elbow-deep in. Remember: You may be the leader of your team, but you're not alone in adjusting to your new role. Your new-producer peers will also be a resource for learning on the job.
