Whenever we plan to make an improvement, the first activity is to find out where we are and then arrive at where we can go and finally at how to go there. From my earlier assignments, the best practice followed is through Current Value Stream Mapping and Future Value Stream Mapping. The gap between the Future VSM and the Current VSM is the scope for improvement. This would generally point to unnecessary movement of material, people and tools and not to forget the unproductive methods. We have achieved more than 50% improvement in productivity by changing the layout, splitting the operations (balancing the line), streamlining material flow, providing the right jigs/fixtures, mistake proofing and improving ergonomics.

Production speed depends on factors like number of stages, personnel involved and technology used. A careful study of the process, paying attention to these factors, can draw attention to some sources of inefficiencies. I recall from an internship, where as part of quality control measures, calculations pertaining to the products were made periodically. Quite a number of times in a day. All these calculations were being done by hand, which took quite some time. By using a software approach (like an excel sheet), the time taken to complete each session of the particular quality control measure, can be reduced significantly. You can boost production speed and not just maintain quality at the same time but improve quality as well.
