A wise woman once said to me, I can’t help you get where you want to go if you don’t tell me where you see yourself. I thought it was presumptuous to share ambitions and goals. But she was very right. If others know where you want to be they are much more likely to help you get there.

Reflecting on my career aspirations has been crucial in aligning my goals with the opportunities within my organization. I’ve found that open communication and collaboration with my team have been key to my growth. By leveraging accessible tools and fostering strong relationships, I’ve been able to contribute effectively to projects and take on leadership roles. My journey highlights that regardless of challenges, a clear vision and a commitment to collaboration can drive personal and professional success.

Clearly define your career goals and objectives. Understand what you want to achieve and how it aligns with your current role and the company’s needs.

In my experience, being clear about your career goals is essential when discussing them with your boss. Having a conversation centered around your career goals and plans is super essential for a productive timeline, but the conversation should be had the right time if applicable. For example, aim to discuss career goals with your boss while you are performing well at work, meeting deadlines, are an absolute star person to be around, etc. If you add significant value to the team, your boss will gain more respect for you over time, thus promoting a positive career goal mindset. In short, if you are doing well, they might not ever want to let you go haha! Stay positive and work hard, easier said than done, but so worth it.

Please learn to showcase your work effectively. PR people are known to be worse at doing PR for themselves. Treat yourself as a client. How can you demonstrate the value you have generated for your clients and agency / organisation in the most effective way? Showcase your work as though you are filing a case study for an industry award.

Before meeting with my boss, I gathered data on the PR campaigns I had led, including metrics like media coverage, audience reach, and engagement rates. This tangible evidence of my contributions made a strong case for my readiness to take on more responsibility. One thing I’ve found helpful is to tie your achievements directly to the company’s goals, demonstrating not just what you’ve done, but how it’s positively impacted the business. By showing the value you’ve already brought, you make a compelling argument for why you deserve to advance in your career.

When communicating career goals to your boss: - Express commitment :Highlight your dedication to advancing in your PR career and your desire to grow within the company. - Seek guidance : Ask for your boss’s advice on how to achieve your goals and align them with the company’s objectives. - Be specific : Mention areas where you want to develop or take on more responsibility, such as specific skills or roles. - Show openness to feedback : Emphasize your willingness to receive feedback and discuss potential opportunities for growth and development.

Be clear, be succinct, decisive but also open minded. Also, think about reciprocity, otherwise, you risk coming across as greedy, entitled and self centered. Not a good look! :)

When speaking to your boss about your career in PR. It is essential to align it with the team's/company's vision. Create a list of your goals aligned in one column and in the second column address and cite company growth objectives that you can contribute to alongside your goals. It is also recommended to talk to your immediate senior or super senior to align better with the business goals of the company and team targets.

This is so important. As you look at your company's/organization's goals, you should see yourself in them. If you don't, you may have to ask yourself some hard questions. Talk to your supervisor, see where he/she sees you in those corporate goals. There may be a season where you focus solely on helping the organization to reach its goals, but you should never completely abandon your vision and dreams. Sometimes, helping your company reach its goals can be a foot stool toward you reaching yours.

Show how your career goals align with the company’s vision and goals. Explain how achieving your objectives can contribute to the company’s success and benefit the team.

My vision should be long term career goals. To discuss relevant aspirations, To outline a plan for achieving my goals, To focus on how I can benefit the company, To highlight my achievements, To match my goals with my experience. I plan to achieve this goal by working my way up the ladder and proving my determination and expertise to the ownership, while gaining the respect of my co-workers. Finally, my vision is to be an honest, empathetic and impactful PR Leader and to be recognized internationally within my industry. I am committed to growing as a leader and delivering value-added benefits and services to the end users.

Whether you are a contractor, employee or consultant, ensure every contribution you make enhances the growth and value not only of your position but for the company overall. I look at this as a symbiotic relationship-we all benefit when goals and achievements align seamlessly

In my experience, it's essential to first demonstrate your commitment to the team and the project. Work diligently, and when the time is right, communicate your ambition to grow within the company. Always treat your clients and colleagues with kindness, regardless of their position, and be willing to lend a helping hand. Those who aspire to lead must be generous with everyone.

This will provide concrete evidence of your capabilities and dedication. Additionally, ensure that your communication is consistent and effective across all verticals—whether you're interacting with colleagues, superiors, or external stakeholders. Actively listening to feedback and adjusting your approach based on the audience's responses can further strengthen your position and contribute to your overall professional growth."

BE THE CHANGE YOU SEEK. My advice is simple. Before sharing your goals or asking for a promotion/raise, make yourself indispensable. Do such a great job for your clients that you - personally - earn their trust and respect. If your boss thinks it will adversely affect his business to lose you, you’re in the driver’s seat. Patience is also a virtue that must be cultivated (but there is a fine line between being patient and being complacent…know the difference.)

Show Commitment - Long-Term Vision :Discuss how excelling in PR aligns with your long-term career goals and your commitment to the company. - Willingness to Learn: Convey your dedication to continuous learning and professional development in the field of PR.

Follow up, without being on the face is important here. Your body language, the way you talk about a slightly different topic should reflect on your keenness about what needs a follow up.

I think following up is the forgotten solider in a lot of situations. Keeping consistent, healthy, and positive communication with you boss, especially about career goals, is essential for crisp communication. Now don't over do it, but DO FOLLOW UP. Be kind, be polite, and follow up.
