1 Identify the root causes

What the SMART goals tend to miss is explaining why this is important in the first place and how it fits into the bigger picture. Knowing how my task or goal contributes to something larger and how it benefits the next colleague or our end customer provides a sense of meaning and is a huge motivation boost.
