Aligning your team’s values with sustainable goals requires a thoughtful and inclusive approach. Begin by understanding your team's core values and identifying how sustainability aligns with those principles, whether it's innovation, responsibility, or long-term growth. Clearly communicate the benefits of sustainability, not just for the environment, but for the team's personal and professional goals. Involve them in decision-making, encouraging input on how sustainable practices can be integrated into daily operations. Provide education and resources to build a shared understanding, and celebrate small victories along the way to reinforce the connection between sustainability and the team’s values.

This is a tricky one. On one hand we know the values of Indians in the past few generations, and at the same time the youngsters these days are caught up with new age values where materialism is popular. Perhaps what will strike them most is to make them relate to the values of their parents and their sustainable life styles, that they will be able to relate better. However, those who hail from the villages and rural areas would be still able to demonstrate the values of simple living, in harmony with nature and avoiding/recycling waste.

How do you get them to embrace the change (any change) you want to achieve? - sell them a result, not a feature - show them what's in it for them - embark them in a journey That's it.

Throughout my career I have learned that when you can connect what you do as a team to the mission, this is very helpful in building motivation. However, as individuals, everybody has different motivators. And as a leader, it is beneficial to learn what motivates each individual on your team. Once you have collected these motivators find the common thread that you can tie back to your sustainability goals. Rinse and repeat for any change you are trying execute.

Starting from the very basic, ‘Know Your Team’. Management roles do not necessarily require to gel with them, but often blending in with them and allowing them to take the lead is a great motivation for your team. Fact is your team is aware of many issues linked to Sustainability. But members are holding back from fear of retribution or repercussion or pushback from colleagues, then as the team lead, there is area to work on creating a more supportive culture. Motivation is a behavioral efficacy. Drawing in positive reference of Sustainability values and how that can impact business KPIs should be consistently highlighted in group meetings. A lot lies in role modeling through action and refraining from ornamented speech only.
