Introducing new brainstorming techniques can meet with resistance, but these strategies encourage acceptance: explain the benefits by clearly articulating how the new methods can lead to more effective outcomes, start small by implementing changes incrementally to allow for gradual adaptation, and provide training through workshops to demonstrate the value and practical application of the new techniques. Highlighting successes and seeking feedback will also help in gaining support and ensuring a smoother transition.

Introducing new brainstorming techniques can be challenging, but the right approach can help ease resistance. Start by explaining the benefits, highlighting how new methods can boost creativity and problem-solving. Begin with small changes to allow for gradual adaptation. For example, try introducing a Liberating Structure like 1-2-4-All, where individuals first think independently, then pair up to discuss, and finally share with the larger group. This method ensures everyone’s ideas are heard and fosters collaborative thinking. Offer workshops to demonstrate how these new techniques work in practice. By supporting the team through these steps, you can encourage acceptance and improve brainstorming outcomes.

I found an effective way to encourage brainstorming is to allow some to simply introduce ideas on a whiteboard on their own time. I have found that many have great ideas and aren't always comfortable in a more traditional brainstorming environment. The more people contribute to new ideas the more future success.

I was able to introduce new brainstorming methods by following 3 rules: 1) First by adapting the method to the present moment: a method is not a fixed framework. This adaptation reassures the team: what matters above all is the team, not the method. 2) Then by emphasizing the educational side by proposing a debrief at the end with the team: allowing the team members to judge the method and to appropriate its operating principles, advantages and limits 3) By promoting the fun aspect: always proposing the same brainstorming method breaks the team's ability to create and imagine. Changing method also means pushing the team to see differently and highlighting different ways of thinking among team members.
