That’s an interesting point! I think we as coaches may have developed preconceived perceptions as to why individuals may be hesitant to participate in group sessions. We may be bang on, we may be way off. I found a helpful alternative was to realize the client’s reluctance, and I think we all would say that nobody wants the competition, and putting themselves out there if they are concerned if they could keep up etc, are deterrents for group training. The motivators that will drive that same client in the future are the successes they have in spite. Our team had success in offering 1-to-1 training, and over time offering semi-private, and then group training. Interestingly, we had clients, do all three scenarios

Encourage your team to join group functional training by connecting to their personal “why.” Ask them to imagine feeling stronger and energized: “What would it be like to walk up stairs without being out of breath, to play with your kids without fatigue, or to move through each day with ease?” Functional training isn’t just exercise; it’s a way to build strength for daily life. Each session brings them closer to these real-life goals in a supportive, welcoming environment, where progress is celebrated and everyone’s efforts are cheered on.
