The majority of projects I see continuously missing deadlines, are not down to the individual, or the element leads on the project, as they understand the requirement & consequences. Delays appear when you need to reach higher up into an organisation for spend approval. Projects I've seen are well researched, developed & consequences understood at the project level, & the next direct line of management. Then the tricky bit, the project team have to produce many versions of cost analysis to show to someone with no interest in the intent of the project, but guards the gate to unlocking funds, & they often leave a project static for months, ignoring the consequence or accountability for blocking timely execution of a time critical project.

First port of call. Is your team member failing or is it you? Have you been 100% honest with your expectations? Can you stand on a table and shout to the whole team that your team player understands the ask, you have been clear with the required deadlines and not your own. Have you assessed and assigned the task to the right person, with the correct skillsets and provided time to coach and support any identified gaps. Do you understand your role and responsibilities in making things happen - guess you had better climb down off that table until you are in a position to do this.

Remove the account holders at your company from the equation as they only approve things that sound familiar, meaning, a good 2 decades ago, when they were analysts. Too many "leads" micro-managing are the reasons why projects go over costs and have to lie when reporting revenue and hours, while blaming the junior employees or new hires for "not being at level". If you care about your client, don't care about their subjective opinions. Care about what they care objectively about, and that is the product or portfolio they have to manage. Usually left to this perspective, my team would deliver under 6 weeks full reports with actual key findings. When having to deal with ill-informed power or political dynamics... they took up to 6 months...

One thing I've found helpful is to try to understand their boundaries with work. Everyone is going to have boundaries with a boss, past, family, religious, etc. The key is to identify if the issue is inside or outside of bounds to talk about. Then work on solutions. I spent way to long in my younger days trying to understand people only to find out that their are some things they they don't want a boss to understand or help with.

Show how much you care. Be the servant leader. Remove road blocks. Talk to them. It’s a lot easier to have a conversation about missing the mark while you are showing you’re doing what you can to help.
