Your team is facing a difficult conversation. How can you show empathy through active listening?

It’s said that there is my truth, your truth and the real truth! Its is like looking at something through a prism. You see the distorted vision of yours and believe it’s the whole. The person on the other side also feels the same. Gaining the right perspective is important to understand and empathise. Note your own personal experience, feelings, and views first. Identify and and manage your emotions. Then activity listen to others and gain their perspective. Listen with your heart! Don’t argue or interrupt. Don’t listen to justify. Listen to understand. Remove yourself from situation and observe as a neutral third party observer. Understand the internal frame of reference. Analyse objectively and exchange empathy . Think win-win and heal.

Active listening is key to showing empathy . 1- Before the Conversation, Choose a quiet, private space where everyone feels comfortable speaking openly, give the full attention and use open body language to show the engagment, use verbal encouragement to acknowledge the speaker to continue, minimize Interruptions, reflect and summarize to show attention and understand their feelings. 2- Responding with empathy and validate their feelings by acknowledging their emotions without judgment and avoid giving unsolicited advice and focus on understanding their perspective first. Advice can come later, if offered and received well. Remember, the goal is to show understanding and support, not necessarily to solve the problem on the spot.

One thing I've found helpful in showing empathy through active listening is maintaining eye contact and nodding to show understanding. This encourages the speaker to continue sharing their thoughts and feelings. Actually, I disagree with the notion that active listening requires immediate problem-solving. Sometimes, people just need to be heard and understood without needing an immediate solution. An example is during my presentation at college in India on finance system funding raising options. A classmate shared their concerns about complex financial terms. By actively listening, acknowledging their confusion, and offering simplified explanations, I helped them feel supported and understood, a more collaborative learning environment.

When we engage in active listening, it is vitally important to be fully present and completely engaged. Noticing body language is essential because it helps the speaker know that the listener is genuinely listening, providing the space for the speaker to be vulnerable. For the listener, please do not nod for the sake of nodding. Nod because you are aware of what is being said and not for optics because the speaker can sense it.

A key aspect of active listening is paraphrasing or summarizing what the speaker has said to ensure mutual understanding. For instance, if someone explains a complex idea, active listening might involve repeating back the main points to confirm understanding.

A simple reminder to be aware of your own expression. I was once videotaped during a practice IBM sales call role play. SHOCKINGLY when I reviewed it I really thought, "omg, I look like an ax murderer... No one will buy a computer from that look." So while we are "intent" to listen, realize that having a softer, lighter facial expression can be more inviting and ease any anxiety. And the energy of patience - that you're not nodding and nodding as if you're waiting for them to "be done". The feeling of I have all the time in the world for you helps the other person feel important, and heard.

Several essential strategies and practices are involved in actively listening with empathy during challenging conversations: Pay Close Attention Get Rid of Distractions: Make sure your body language is friendly and open. To demonstrate involvement, nod sporadically and slant slightly forward. 2. Pay Attention without interrupting. Don't Make Snap Decisions. 3. Consider and rephrase Consider Again: To make things clearer, ask questions about anything you're unsure about. 4. Acknowledge Their Emotions Accept Your Feelings and Empathize. 5. Give a thoughtful response Act with integrity and decency. 6. Confirmation: After the discussion, you can send a follow-up to let them know you're still thinking about and concerned about the issue.

Having difficult conversations is a little like ripping off a bandaid to allow the fresh air to circulate and heal. That means showing each person in the team the courtesy of time and space to speak without interruption and without fearing judgement or backlash, regardless of your feelings about what each person has to say. Showing empathy and understanding is about acknowledging the importance of someone's feelings and showing that their feelings matter. It's not necessarily agreeing with what they have to say, but you're genuinely being present and hearing their concerns. Taking the right actions on the back of those conversations can lead to great professional and personal growth.

Yes, and It is essential to be genuine about it. Don't say "I get you" "I know how that feels", unless you actually do! If you don't have relatable experience, say so, "I can't relate to that, but thank you for opening my eyes to it".

Give yourself space to not necessarily "reflect back right." It might sound like, "I'm hearing xyzzy... Did I get that right?" And if they say no and explain what they mean again, "Thanks very much for letting me know and helping me gain a sense of where you are at." Yes understanding the "content" is important, and if it takes a few tries, that is ok. The process of dialoguing deepens relationships and helps them to grow!

Asking questions with your teammates is create good image, it shows that you are caring them. It demonstrates that you have interest in solving their problems. You should ask them, "What kind of work policies should be implemented", or "What should be change in work environment". These questions really create your good image towards your team.

Asking questions is indeed a powerful component of active listening because it shows genuine interest in understanding the speaker's perspective and encourages them to elaborate on their thoughts. Questions can prompt the speaker to delve deeper into their thoughts and feelings. For example, in a therapy session, asking open-ended questions like "How did that make you feel?" encourages the client to explore their emotions more fully.

It may take effort to ask open-ended questions. It calls for curiosity. When we genuinely want to learn something, we rely on open-ended questions to dig deeper to discover truths. Being curious helps us to use open-ended questions to be fully engaged with the speaker and show that we are interested.

An amazing open question we can ask comes from Nonviolent Communication (NVC), the communication process created by the psychologist Marshall Rosenberg: How can I make your life more wonderful? If it doesn't seem quite appropriate for a working environment, we can rephrase it, e.g., How can I make this team work more satisfying for you? How can I change the way I interact with you, so that all your needs are being met? How can I best address your concerns, so we can reach the highest potential of our team? So, how would you use and rephrase the question for your own circumstances?

My perspective is the best way to help someone is to help them help themselves. In other words, "walk beside them" as long and patiently as is necessary for them to "fix" the problem themselves. This is very empowering for the other person.

A heartfelt and simple approach can sound like: "We've covered a lot,... How can I help?" or How might I be helpful?" or Not that you need help, but know I'm here to support you any way I can." (and <pause>) Conveying that you're there can mean the world to others and reinforce that they're not alone.

As active listeners, we are guides to solutions when needed. As stated in one of the comments, there are times when the speaker needs to talk only, and no solutions are needed. This form of support is helpful as well. Whether in a professional or personal setting, active listening is a support system that leads to solutions or a safe, judgment-free space to release or declutter the noise in the speaker's life.

This is to show that you are willing to assist in the difficult times, not just by listening but also stretching a hand wherever needed.

Simple phrases like "I hear you/that makes sense" "How can I support you here" "Let's pause and take a minute to process this" "What I hear you saying is..." "What would happen if we slowed down for a minute" The best solutions are often already present and don't need to be rushed toward. Listening allows us to hold space, summarize, reflect back, and remove any ego that would get in the way of what IS and what COULD be.

Following up doesn’t always have to be about addressing issues; it can also involve celebrating achievements and progress. For example, after a challenging project launch, following up with the team to acknowledge their hard work and success reinforces commitment to recognizing and appreciating contributions.

I follow-up with my clients after our listening sessions. It shows that they matter and they have continued support. This is true in a professional setting. When there is follow-up, the team knows it was not an exercise to pacify a difficult situation or unresolved issues. This is crucial as a signal of progress or transformation within an organization or company. The team will know they are validated, heard, and respected.

Being heard is one of the most life-giving gifts we can give to others. It is about honoring the person, showing that they matter, no matter what we think about what they are saying and jump to conclusions, realize it is important to them. It's only by honoring others we are honered.

You need to take each and everyone's concern into consideration. Seek for what they intend to communicate individually, to know where the difficulty results from. Maybe, it may be as a result of unstructured question onboard or luck of clarity of communicated situation to be solved. It may also be as a result of the members low level of knowledge on how to apply problem solving strategies in giving a solution. If all of the above are rightfully sorted, it will enhance clarity in the members contributions.

A win/win attitude must prevail throughout the entire process How can we achieve a result where everyone in the process is satisfied with the result? This needs to occur without anyone being exploited in the process To get to that result, some may agree to a loss of some sort - most easily explained in a financial transaction where someone accepts less than they believe they are due to reach a satisfactory outcome Therefore, the best result possible in the circumstances, that moves everyone forward must be the goal
