It is critical to well establish the project well before the start date and have the milestones highlighted. Set out a reward for reaching each of them. Could be as simple as a Pizza lunch or other things you know your team will enjoy. Celebrate the small wins in between the milestones. Be honest and frank with the team and as supportive as possible and insure those who are the sponsors etc. also engage with the team routinely.
