When conflicts arise, the first question I ask what signals were missed to avoid the situation in the first place. Not always possible, but I prefer to start with what could I, the team, or the organization have done to avoid the conflict from occurring. I prefer spending more time focusing on how to avoid such scenarios from occurring.

When conflicts arise in a healthcare team, addressing them promptly is essential for maintaining a positive work environment. Encouraging open dialogue is a key strategy; creating a safe space allows team members to voice their concerns without fear of judgment. For example, holding regular team meetings can facilitate honest discussions and foster trust. If conflicts escalate, seeking mediation from a neutral third party can be invaluable. This approach provides an unbiased perspective and can help navigate sensitive issues, especially in high-stress healthcare settings.

One thing I’ve found helpful is in addressing this issues promptly which goes a long way in showing the team that they matter. Creating an environment that is a safe space and intentionally allowing all the affected parties air their grievances is key. Clearly outlining the next steps involved in reaching a resolution and providing updates is also important. Ultimately, it’s crucial to emphasise that you all are in the same team with a shared objective hence alignment is key. Inviting an expert to have a round table discussion on the same also provides an unbiased perspective to the team.

In healthcare, where emotions run high, conflict resolution is crucial for team cohesion. I focus on fostering empathy and psychological safety. Structured debrief sessions, akin to post-surgery reviews, allow team members to share concerns without blame. Empowering leaders at every level to manage conflicts early is key, as is celebrating small wins together to boost morale and reinforce our shared mission. A harmonious team isn’t just efficient; it’s essential for patient care. Addressing issues with empathy and clear communication strengthens our commitment to excellence in patient care and builds a resilient, supportive workplace.

In the healthcare field, the focus is always on patient care, which should be provided with care, peace, and love as a team. Accuracy, efficacy, patient safety, positive patient outcomes...are the key points in this field. Conflicts amongst team members may occur. If it affects patient care and has to do with finances or ethics, then it's better to split up. All team members should have the same values. Have frequent team huddles and support each other while focusing on caring for the patients ethically and with care. If all team members have the same positive patient care values and support each other, we can have positive resolutions.
