Your team is divided on strategic goals. How can you align everyone's priorities effectively?
When your team is splintered on strategic goals, achieving alignment is critical for success. To steer everyone in the same direction:
- Facilitate an open-forum discussion to understand differing viewpoints and build consensus.
- Clearly define and communicate the overarching company goals and how each team member's work contributes.

Your role on the team is a determining factor about how you can impact aligning your team. If you're the manager, you need to be sure you've clearly articulated the vision b/c vision comes before goals. Most importantly, you need to be intentional and broadly communicate how the decision about what goal(s) to pursue will be made. There's a lot of different decision-making models to consider, but without clear understanding of how the decision is going to be made, the team won't know how to contribute to the conversation most productively. As a team member, assuming you know the vision and decision-making model, you have a responsibility to share all the relevant information you have that would help inform others on how create goals.

Alignment within a team isn't just about setting goals it's about creating a shared vision. While open-forum discussions are useful, I believe the key lies in fostering genuine collaboration. Each team member should not only understand their role but also how their efforts directly impact the bigger picture. Often, goals are communicated, but the "why" behind them gets lost. For me, ensuring alignment means consistently connecting personal objectives to the larger strategy, reminding the team that their contributions matter. Setting measurable targets is important, but celebrating small wins along the way keeps everyone motivated and on course.

Aligning everyone's priorities effectively requires fostering open communication and ensuring clarity on the overall vision. Encourage a team discussion to understand individual concerns and perspectives. Emphasize how each goal ties into the organization's mission, helping team members see the bigger picture. Prioritize tasks based on impact and urgency, creating a shared roadmap that everyone agrees on. Regularly check in with the team to ensure alignment and address any emerging conflicts. This approach helps unify priorities while maintaining a collaborative environment.
