Predictive maintenance is a valuable technique for reducing unplanned shutdowns. These technologies often utilize non-destructive tests and necessitate advanced diagnostics. These techniques provide additional data for trending and comprehending the fundamental scientific interpretations.

Most of PdM technologies are as follows. vibration analysis, thermal imaging, ultrasound testing, motor testing using MCSA & etc. Purpose of every technology is to monitor and record the operating condition of machine and report the abnormality as the way defined by any organization. Most common of these technologies is vibration monitoring. Accelerometer sensors are commonly used for day-to-day monitoring. and for turbomachinery, Displacement probes are used as the part of online monitoring system. Trend value of any measured operating parameter make it easy for every analyst to highlights the problem, but for detail analysis and to pinpoint the fault/abnormality, some additional parameter and techniques like spectrum, waveform are needed.

In my opinion, major setback & resistance comes from the organization's management for the adaptation of new technology. High Capex of attaining the new technology and failing of get any satisfactory ROI in specified period is more concerning to keep it running for the long term. Although, it increases the organization's Opex, to justify it is very beneficial to calculate the overall effectiveness of the technology. Other concern that comes over time is less-motivated team due to Un acknowledgment of their efforts and not giving the deserving credit and appreciation.

Start with one test platform to show the ROI before implementing plant wide. (Mine was vibration analysis on a sugar mill) Outline the plan of what you want analyze (thrust bearing vibration and deflection). Set the baseline data of deflection when the bearing is new and the mill is properly balaced. Monitor and record deflection during normal operation. Compare operational sounds and data. Record the deflection when the bearing fails. Adjust the notification alarm to a percentage of the failure rate. Soon you will have dialed in the anticipated failure of the bearing so it can be timely replaced during downtime instead of during production. Change periodicity to metered instead of calander based. Implement on remaining equipment.
