When your team is divided over the cause of a network issue, it’s crucial to manage differing viewpoints constructively. Here’s how you can navigate this challenge:
How do you handle team disagreements in network engineering? Share your strategies.
-
Cut the network issue in half, whichever part of the team is upset… no wait… cut the team in two - whichever team… no uh… call for a sword and cut DNS into quarters lengthwise… hang on… that’s not right…
-
First thing is to bring differences on the table to brainstorm and hear from all parties. No decisions made. Second - Once theories are heard we shift towards data facts/logs/repro to further narrow down the problem. Third - With data in hand/repro we would surely end up having consensus. At this point we reconsider all theories discussed earlier as every feedback is valuable. This brain storming session helps us stitch all dots together. Fourth - do a retrospective of the issue to see what went wrong and what could have been better done to firstly mitigate the issue or reduce impact. Finally track, monitor and implement learnings from above step with team members engaged.
-
Give each member of the team and equal opportunity to proof their opinions about the cause of the network issue. Gather enough facts from the team and allow discussions among the team members. Lab simulations can be done and issue can be simulated again to ensure that the RCA is clear to prevent reoccurrence of the network issue. The team lead should take charge and ensure ensure the discussion are fair enough.
-
Most of the time it is understanding the nature of issue that provides enough evidence on what could be the cause. Site up should be a priority, come up with a short term plan to restore service and then Get to drawing board, encourage team to provide their perspective on how we could solve this in a manner it won’t happen again. Brainstorm on how a solution will fail and rework till we cannot find failure scenarios. Having diverse perspective in a group for scenarios like this is a gift, we should use it to our advantage.
-
To resolve a network issue when opinions differ, I gather the team for an open discussion, encouraging each person to share their insights to uncover potential causes. Next, we rely on data-driven analysis by examining logs and using network monitoring tools, letting facts guide the conversation. I often pair team members with differing views to troubleshoot together, promoting collaboration. We then establish a structured testing process to validate each hypothesis objectively. If a consensus isn't reached, I make a data-backed decision, valuing everyone’s input to foster unity. This approach ensures a balanced and efficient resolution.
