1 Assess Needs

To start, you need to assess the specific needs of your application. A monolithic architecture, where the application is built as a single unit, has its benefits for certain projects, especially those with a limited scope or where tight integration of components is required. On the other hand, microservices allow for more granular scaling and can be more resilient to failure. Evaluate the pain points in your current architecture. Are there scalability issues? Do different parts of the application need to be updated at different paces? Your path forward will depend on these strategic needs.

When assessing whether to break up your monolith, you have to understand the why, as otherwise you risk simply creating a distributed monolith, which doesn't solve any of the problems and increasing overhead. The problem with a monolith typically comes in two forms, either a constraint on the system or the team. If parts of the system are becoming bottlenecks or using up huge amounts of resources to operate, then those are good candidates to strangle off into their own service so they can be scaled independently. If the team are treading on each others toes a lot and everything is tightly coupled together, then too may be a good candidate, however making your monolith more modular may be a better strategy to consider first.

In my experience, the team will want their concerns to be heard, and this is an important part of making any decision. There have been times that, after speaking to a few people on an individual basis about the issue, we've gone into a meeting somewhat expecting a particular outcome, but having listened to each other, come out with a much better, well-rounded solution that none of us would had arrived at in isolation. If you can take the time to understand the problem first, then making a decision on which solution to pick becomes obvious to everyone. It's important to think about facilitation here, everyone needs to be heard, and the loudest can't dominate. Try a white boarding format that facilities this if you're struggling with this.
