Your team is afraid to report safety concerns. How can you help them speak up?

I need to be sure that the work environment enables and empowers employees to feel safe enough to voice their workplace safety concerns without fear of reprisal. So, before I can help my team report safety concerns, I will first assess and understand the reason for their fears to find out if they are unfounded or misguided. Now if these fears are misplaced, I can start with baby steps of developing and implementing an anonymous reporting mechanism for safety concerns to protect identities and encourage candid feedback while building their trust.

You need to undertake a serious and well thought measure of trust in your organization. If workers don’t trust leaders, any initiative will not be welcomed by employees. They will deem it as just the new “fad”. Create trust, this way you will know what matters for your team and start from there. Your workers understand better than anyone what is important to to work safely. Make sure to provide what they need, there is no better lever to improve “safety culture”.

Things to consider: 1. find out exactly what are the barriers to reporting - many always believe always that is it "the culture" but perhaps it is the system, their understanding of what is expected, their lack of knowledge about how things are done 2. whatever you are trying to achieve in reporting must be seen to add value to the person reporting it - if entries are perceived to simply be going in a void and nothing further is even seen to be done or known to be done, then reports will decrease - have a method to follow-up and close out reports 3. do not recommend a reward model - think about this deeply - people are responding to the reward not to the importance of the activity that generates the reward Love thy neighbour :)

With this bonding and trusting each other the safety reports keeps gaining traction between you and the team.

Além disso, é essencial fornecer treinamento, recursos e suporte adequados para práticas e procedimentos de seguran?a. Building trust and rapport with your team will help them to confidentially report safety concerns. By building rapport at the initial stage, you have to show genuine interest in their well-being and how they can be very effective at work. You have to also communicate effectively with the team and ensure you share your experiences with them. Let them know the outcomes of the actions you have taken relating to the reporting of safety concerns to other team or management (positive or negative outcome). Do not let the actions of reporting safety concerns demoralized the team. Create and improve a positive safety culture in the workplace.

If your team is afraid of reporting safety concern, it shows that there is a serious problem in work culture. We need to focus on improving workplace safety culture by removing blaming and punishing people. W also need to increase reporting by motivating people. rewarding reportings and showing them that management is really concern about the safety of people and if any reporting done shall be taken in positive spirit and proper action to be taken. This will help organisation to develop positive positive HSE culture and ultimately help in reducing safety concerns

- First, I want them to know the consequences of not reporting safety concerns. If you don't report a potential hazard, it may lead to an accident, injury, or even death. You may also face legal or disciplinary actions for failing to comply with safety regulations. Reporting safety concerns is not only your right but also your responsibility. - Second, we want to give them opportunities to gain the confidence to speak up. We will provide them with training and resources on reporting safety concerns effectively and respectfully. We will also create a safe and supportive environment where you can voice your opinions without fear of retaliation or judgment. We will listen to your feedback and take action to address your concerns.

The best way to motivate a team to report security issues in companies is by empowering them and awakening the leadership potential that they all possess, only that some keep it dormant. Another important point that was not mentioned is ensuring that the team is truly prepared to take on the role of daily overseer/auditor.

Further to the views of other professional, we need to make procedures easy and simple. For example a worker report near miss incident and then we start investigations that requires repeated statements from the worker, calling him in HSE meeting, then managers talk to him, then client call him and asking qiestions etc. This will increase hesitation and fear among the workers to report safety concerns.
