More than just assessing the damage and its potential implications, internally and externally. I find that it is equally as important to assess the intent. You can divide the intent into 5 boxes - Was it intentionally leaked - Was the person implicated in the data leak aware of his/her actions? - Was it due to recklessness? - Due to Negligence? - Or a pure accident? Determining the above intend can help you with policies and internal training.
