Offering financial incentives for reducing carbon footprints can be effective, with companies saving between 5% and 10% in costs. Adopt a time-specific approach in the short term, set policies and conduct initial audits, in the medium term, implement training and regular audits, in the long term, foster continuous improvement and build long-term relationships with committed suppliers. You can enforce eco-friendly practices and contribute to a sustainable supply chain.

If your supplier is ignoring your sustainability policy, it’s crucial to take a firm yet collaborative approach to enforce eco-friendly practices. Start by clearly communicating your expectations and the importance of sustainability to your business, emphasizing how non-compliance could affect the partnership. Engage in a constructive dialogue to understand the challenges they may be facing, and offer support or resources to help them meet your sustainability criteria. Set clear deadlines for improvement and establish regular checkpoints to monitor progress. If necessary, explore alternative suppliers who align with your sustainability values, but give the supplier the opportunity to adapt before making drastic decisions.

Suppliers are critical part of any company especially if the majority of business is dependent on them. An organization should set a clear expectation and communication to their value chain partners in order to unite together for sustainable future. This starts with aligning broader ESG goals of company and value chain partners showcasing monetary and non monetary benefits including better risk management, continuous process improvement, improving reputation, meeting BRSR compliance, sustainable practices of integrating RE, ETP, waste management with ROI. An effective communication supported by regular training and audit checks will encourage partners to align and participate with confidence.

One workable method that I have found helpful is through contractual control. Clearly listing the expectations in the purchase order, including the clause for periodic audits has created a very good level of transparency. In addition, with audits, the awareness is enhanced and the expectations are reinforced. Of course, for those not able to honour the contractual provisions despite coaching and counseling, parting is a last resort.

Compliance withe mandatory policies is a must. When a supplier is struggling common grounds to comply with them, it’s best to understand and a communication regarding the problem at hand. Ensuring that whether they require a proper training or any support regarding the due diligence must be done. If you have a long standing relationship with the supplier then it’s easy to communicate and gain their compliance. If the relationship with supplier is temporary and even after the communication you don’t get any response it’s best to revaluate your options. Only through collaboration and communication you can gain confidence of the supplier.
