Demonstrate your commitment to change by acting on the feedback you receive. Authenticity is shown through actions, not just words. Adjust your messaging and behavior to reflect stakeholder concerns and desires. Communicate the actions you have taken to and tie it back to your core values as an organization.
-
If the people who matter to you are skeptical of your messaging, the first step is to listen deeply to their concerns without being defensive. You'll learn whether you've made a common mistake like: 1) making claims that don't match your actions 2) repeating a promise you've previously broken or failed to keep 3) failing to learn from their previous criticisms or concerns. The second step is to engage them in the remedy. Show them you value them. 1) Acknowledging the misalignment, 2) asking stakeholders to help you improve, and then 3) acting on their recommendations in a way that satisfies them — not just checking a box for your organization — goes a long way toward rebuilding trust.

1. Acknowledge Concerns – Listen and validate their doubts without being defensive. 2. Be Honest – Be clear about what went wrong and how you plan to fix it. 3. Show Progress – Start with small wins to prove things are improving. 4. Communicate Often – Keep them updated regularly, even when things are slow. 5. Involve Them – Ask for their input and make them part of the solution. 6. Own Mistakes – Admit when you’re wrong and show how you’ll avoid it next time. 7. Adapt – Stay open to feedback and adjust your approach if needed. This builds trust over time and shows you’re committed to improvement.
-
Step 1: Audit - Take a deep dive into your current messaging strategy and check if your offerings or products match that promise. Step 2: Listen and Learn - Be open to all kinds of feedback and go one step beyond in opening communication to understand where the mistrust is coming from. Step 3: Reflect and Recognise - Instead of being closed off to mistakes and missteps, understand where you went wrong and be transparent with your stakeholders about it. Step 4: Follow Through - Communicate your ways to amend your messaging and show commitment by sticking to those plans. Deliver on promises and remember to keep stakeholders informed.
-
Authenticity can come in many forms but if folks don't buy what you're saying, it is meaningless. A few ways to navigate trust gaps are to be open and honest with what you are trying to communicate. Sometimes that means you don't have all the answers. If that is the case, say so. Just as important though is to speak in actions and not platitudes. Share what you/organization are doing. Not just what you are "committed to do." The more direct, honest, and candid you can be, the better.
